Hey everyone,

I want to take a few accounting classes (not 102a or 102b but 121/131/etc), but I am not in Haas. Does anyone know the chances of me getting into those classes? Is there anyway I can get an advisor code to get into those classes? (i'm in the college on engineering but i don't think that matters) Or anything I should just now in general about getting into the smaller accounting classes in general?

Thanks!

It depends on what you take? I’m a Econ major, but I usually take accounting classes on the side since I want to get my CPA. You don’t need a advisor code to get into the classes, you usually just waitlist yourself onto them and then a week or two before school starts, they let people in who are on the waitlist. The 120s series is accounting, while the 130s series is finance.

For 120s, the classes are all accounting classes, which means you have to start from 102a and work your way up…UGBA 102a usually has a lot of classes for fall, so it is easy to phase II it, not so much in the spring…If you don’t want to take UGBA 102a, I guess you could study it on your own, or take it at community college, and just jump into UGBA 120a (which is pretty popular though so you might have to just phase I it…you will be put on the waitlist, but they let everyone in so you dont really have to stress). After UGBA 120a (intermediate), 120b (advanced, and the others don’t really fill up (though check berkeley oracle or w/e)

For 130s, they are finance classes, so you would have to take ugba 103 before taking the other ones…unless you already have a finance background, or have taken something similar, then jump into the 130…though the ugba 131 class with etter is popular so phase I that

How do you manage to take Econ major and accounting/finance classes at the same time:

accounting: 102A, 102B, 120A, 120B (has to take 102A and 120A before other classes), 121, 122, 126, 127-1,2,3…
Finance: 103 and 131/132 - counts as two econ elective courses.
Econ: need to take 100A and 140 and two more electives (I can not find any easy classes at all). taken 100A and 175 already

so how do you manage to get them done in 4-5 semesters without summer (get interns anyway instead)? it looks like that you need to take 3 core courses (10-12 units) every semesters (+ 1 easy 3-4 units course in my consideration)

well Econ doesn’t have much requirements compared to other majors…so that makes it easier, as for what i did, though I started my accounting classes a little early…PM me if you have any questions

easy Econ classes could be Econ 151, Econ 155, Econ 162 (these are memorization classes, if you can memorize, then you can do great). I would say take Econ 100A and 140 during summer if you have the time…(Carson during summer is way easier…and he actually cares about teaching)

Tip: you don’t have to take ALL the accounting/finance classes…what are you going to do for a future career? If you’re going to do CPA, take all the accounting classes…if you’re going to focus on a finance-based career, then a mix of accounting/finance classes would be more useful (i.e. you wouldnt need to take ugba 121, which is tax because you’re not going to be working on income taxes nor ugba 126, auditing ). You might as well use the extra time to join BIG, Ascend, or any business club you’re interested in.

take ugba 102a first.

ugba 120a, ugba 121, ugba 122 only requires ugba 102a

you can take ugba 102b along with ugba120a, ugba 122, or ugba 103 at anytime…

UGBA 103, they dont check prereqs nor do you need them, so you can take this whenever too…(though I heard this doesnt count as a econ elective anymore…so you would have to take UGBA 131 now…)

you can take ugba 131 after you take ugba 103

ugba 120b and ugba 126 only requires ugba 120a

This is what I did

UGBA 102A (summer after freshmen year, though you could take this your freshman year…but no one really says anything about it…)

UGBA 102B/UGBA 103 (sophomore year, spring…since I accidentally phased 2 UGBA 102B so I couldn’t get in), also did an part-time internship in SF

UGBA 120A/UGBA 122 (junior)

senior year (taking UGBA 120B right now, will cram UGBA 121 and 126 for spring because I was lazy and I am doing my AC class right now…and taking Japanese and Chinese…so that’s actually my fault haha)

Thanks totalcaprice! That’s great info.

Does take UGBA 102B/UGBA120A/UGBA 103 (total of 11 units, 3 core courses) together with one non-major easy 4 units course manageable in load (total of 15 units) in spring 2014?
I think this combination is easier than Econ100B and other 2 core courses (UGBA 120A/102B/103).
Does the required technical memorization of three UGBA accounting/Finance core courses manageable?
if not, is it preferred to take 120A first instead of 102B?

It should be fine; none of them are particularly hard, it is more that they are 1. technical, 2.curves are pretty high NOT because the material is hard but because everyone else does well since the material is easy to pick up 3.lot of memorizing random formulas, and memorizing accounting info. If your memorization skills are not bad, I would go for it.

Just make sure you are doing extracurriculars!!! (stick with a business club for your years at Cal and make your way up to officer…will help you in the long run). JUST DON’T FORGET to finish your econ reqs so you can declare econ (are you even econ?) and finish your GEs…AC…or whatever

Thanks totalcaprice!
Yes, I have actively participated business club and finished all econ prerequisite and AC/breath so far at sophomore.

For UGBA Accounting CPA path forward:

Courses completed: UGBA102A/B, 120AA/AB, 121, 126 and one Fraud course at college + Summer interns
Course remained to be taken: UGBA 120B, 122, 131, (127) (128)

Question: what is the best sequence to take these courses as I will take only 2 at a time
Proposed: 120B/122 (Fall '15) and then 131 / (might miss 127 and 128 if it does not open during spring '16)
