Im applying to the Univeristy of Maryland College Park in the fall and I have an odd problem.

My father has worked at the University for 20 years or so and in his contract it says that his child can recieve free tution to any Maryland public school. Now I would bring my question to my father but we are not on speaking terms and never will be. My mom has tried to speak with my father but it is pointless because he wont tell her anything and if he did he just would lie and decieve her at any chance.

I understand fragments of what my mother has told me. Apparently, if i go the the University of Maryland my father would actually recieve money for sending me to the university if something is in his name or something like that. Which makes no sense to me but its all Ive ever been told.

Anyway im not sure at all who to contact to find out more information. Can anyone direct me to a department or what to call? Has anyone ever had a parent with this in their contract? Im very confused and unsure how to go about this.

I would call the university admissions department and ask them.

I doubt he would get paid for you to attend. But there would be forms that he would have to sign authorizing payment for you as his child; it’s not an automatic credit on your tuition bill. This would be difficult to accomplish if you are not on speaking terms, I imagine.

Call financial aid. There will be a fair amount of ******** to go through before you speak to the right person, but hang in there. Then explain the situation anonymously. If you’re not a student then they have no info on you. (If a student calls they might as for an UID number)

Are your parents still married? If not does he have any type of custody of you? If they’re married, your mother could honestly take care of a majority of it.

I think it’s really unlikely that they would pay him for sending you to school here. Half of the professors are on furlough and have been for three years.

But go around admissions. They will know little to nothing. Financial aid or bursar’s office are my guesses.

Also post over at the UMDCP board. People there can give you more specific info, and I believe one or two of the regular student posters might have faculty parents.

@Ginab591 - My parents are divorced and my father is suppose to have me once or twice a month but ive stoped going completely for a year now, but legally the custody agreement is still the same.

Anyway im 99% positive he does get some sort of reimbursement for my attendance
which is extremely wierd but thats precisely why I want to get some information on this issue. So thank you i will call financial aid on Monday
