I'm planning on not taking a computer to Berkeley. Since this will be my first semester I don't know how this might turn out.

Im not taking one to avoid getting distracted/procrastinating in my room. Instead I'd use the library computers. Would anyone recommend not doing this? How good are the computers on campus/ where is the best place to go for one.

well i cant afford to buy a laptop. I guess what I mean is it necessary to have a computer in my room for studying and doing essays? wouldnt it be the same as going to a nearby computer lab?

i agree with anony33, if I had a computer at hand in my room I would probably get addicted to something whether it was blogs, youtube or facebook even. I tend to procrastinate a lot. I know at a library I wouldnt do any of that, cause its a library, so what would be the point of having a computer in my room if id do all studying at libraries.

Library computers are too far to be convenient. If you live the dorms, their computers labs are open until 1am. However, if you have to be up late writing a paper, doing research, or other stuff online (bspace, mastering physics, etc), it can be inconvenient.

If you worried, I recommend bringing the laptop and installing some free software that limits internet surfing. Then give the password to your friend/roommate/ra in case you need more internet.

If you can’t afford to buy a laptop, I assume that you have a low efc. Shouldn’t you be getting a large amount of financial aid then? And no, it’s not the same. Ignoring all the non-academic things you would want to do on a computer, you won’t want to walk to the library everytime you need to type something/ research something/send a email…

Because there are things beyond studying that you need to do on a computer. Doesn’t hurt to try it and and buy a laptop if it doesn’t work. though.

get a netbook at the least. if you’re having trouble concentrating, go to the library, i find the environment there beneficial to my studying, even if i have my laptop with me to type up some annoying essay.

get a quote from the internet for the kind of computer you want and request the funds from school to buy a new computer. They will loan you up to $2500 once per 4 years to do that. The forms may not be up for a while but you really should have a laptop.

you’re going to be at a big disadvantage. for example, taking notes on a laptop in class (or webcast lol) saves you SO much time. i tried hand-writing my notes for biology last semester before switching to taking notes on Microsoft Word, and i ended up with very good and detailed notes in half the time it took me to hand-write them.

Trust me. you’re better off just buying yourself a laptop. computers are pretty cheap these days. you can get a decent one for $500-600. personally, i think the library computers everywhere and readily available, but they aren’t that usable. I mean, they don’t even have usb support for you to save essays into ur flash drive. if you’re really strapped for cash, you can apply for emergency loans to cover the cost of ur computer.

once my computer was broken and for a whole day I had so much free time that it blew my mind. the world was so beautiful and sparkly, but then I found a laptop and it was the end.

OP-there will be plenty of time sucks, time wasters, distractions at school-plus you’ll likely find people willing to join you in procrastinating. Discipline and a will power are a must.
