I came in third in a fairly large (international) competition in 2004 (unrelated to academics), but when I reported this achievement on one of my college applications for some reason I was thinking it was 2005. The information about this competition is available online, and if they were to look at the records for 2005 they might think I was lying. I submitted my application five days ago, but would it be worth it to report this error to the admissions office?

Yes, it definitely would. You could get in trouble for "lying"... on the other hand, reporting it would show bravery and responsibility.

"Bravery and responsibility"? Let's not get carried away. It's a small mistake, and I seriously doubt they have time to check records anyway.

That said, go ahead and let them know. Better for you if they have all the correct information.
