I read in the financial aid pages of the UCSD website that you should notify UCSD of any outside scholarships you intend to apply to your tuition cost. Does this include National Merit Scholarships? Because I reckon that's 'outside aid,' but since you're required to tell NMSC what college you'll be attending, does that mean they've already notified the school?

Thanks in advance.

You ought to talk to Saloni about this one ;]
She’ got about 34875463 million bucks in outside scholarships + regents and all that good stuff (grrrr) so I reckon she knows best about what to do with it.

I seriously need to get off CC and study.

Haha, that’s a good idea! I think she got NMS, too, for that matter.

So do I. I took a Barron’s practice test for Eng. and BAAARELY got a 5–108 on the dot (assuming 7/8/7 essays). BAAAW. ;_; This is the one I really need to be able to get a 5 on (for my own peace of mind, not credits, LOLZ).

Thanks~

If you get outside scholarships paid to your name, can you sneak it by UCSD and not tell them? xP

Sneak as many by as possible. The only ones that you can (AND SHOULD) really sneak by are the ones that get paid directly to your name/bank account, and not to the school. You have regents right? Well, if you get ANY need, then the money they’ll give you to cover need for regents will be reduced dollar for dollar. Totally blows. You still get that stipend though!

I don’t think you can sneak by National Merit. I’m pretty sure it goes straight to the school instead of straight to you hands, so you’ll have to report it. It’ll just make for a smoother financial aid life, so they don’t have to charge you later once they catch wind that you’re getting outside aid. I lost about $1500 in aid from the regents scholarship because I unexpectedly got a federal scholarship for $1500. Kinda interesting how they basically still charge me for not reporting it and pay me back with the scholarship each quarter this year.

Haha ok, because I specifically applied to only scholarships that will pay to my name. =P

Is the Regents scholarship adjusted to your costs? So like, if I buy the hugest meal plan and other random costs and what not, they’ll fix how much they offer?

If you have financial need, the regents scholarship will scale to accommodate for that need in gift aid, and building off that, your financial need is determined through whatever your FAFSA results were against what UCSD estimates the general cost of attendance to be WITH general living costs built into it. Your splurging won’t be picked up by UCSD :P

Aww… Well, I called the scholarship people at UCSD about Regents and they said that if you end up needing to pay a lot more than the average costs, then you can send in a request to get that covered. So disappointed, I wanted to spend as much as I possibly could. xP
