Now that Monroe Scholarships are going out...

When do regular decisions come out? I think I saw on the W&M website that acceptances are sent out by April 1st? Have there been any cases when OOS hears before April? I'm just getting pretty anxious/nervous here since it's my number one choice.

I think the last few years they have been slightly before April 1, someone who has got their letter more recently than me can confirm (or tell me I am wrong).

I remember that all mine came over Spring Break, which I believe was the week after Easter.

Easter was early last year…so was spring break. 2007, I think the decisions were mailed around March 22.

Son just got envelope today - “Welcome” on the front - can’t wait until he gets home!!!

I got accepted today!!
and am a monroe scholar, but what is it?

BAP91: lol me too, and i had the same question

My student got one too - congratulations everyone! - According to the letter you get $3,000 summer stipend, preferred housing, etc. - Unfortunately, no merit aid which will make it almost impossible - had been hoping for Murray since we’re out of state.

Me, too!!! Are there any more scholarships available?

Is anyone going to the April 18th orientation?

It’s summer research money. Possibly priority registration for your first semester? You can live in the Monroe dorm which… is closest to Wawa. lol

You can apply for Monroe after your freshman year if didn’t get it as a high school senior and you still want it.

Anyone accepted AND NOT a monroe scholar?

no, im not going to the April 18th orientation. I will be going to one of them sometime during Spring break.

Students can apply for the Monroe program after freshman year, but I believe they need a 3.81 GPA to qualify, which not many freshmen get! According to the website, rising sophomores with qualifying GPAs are invited to apply, and there is an application procedure which requires a cover letter, faculty rec, etc.

Here’s a link to the info about becoming a Monroe as a sophomore: [Monroe Scholars: Rising Sophomores | Charles Center](http://web.wm.edu/charlescenter/monroe/monroesoph.php) It shows that more W & M freshmen than I thought post qualifying GPAs - approximately 100 (out of 1400)! Impressive accomplishment at a school with so little grade inflation. The number of sophomore Monroes chosen depends upon the number of students already in the program.

The major benefits of being a Monroe are the $3K summer study stipend, priority registration for fall semester of freshman year, and honors housing freshman year, though some Monroes elect not to live in Monroe Hall, and some years Monroe Hall can’t accommodate all the students who request housing there. My oldest d was a Monroe in 2001, and that year there was such an overflow of Monroes that they were housed in the first two floors of Hunt Hall, as well as in Monroe Hall.

S got notification that he’s a Monroe Scholar, and just the other day got an e-mail that he’s an Echols Scholar at UVA. Both wonderful schools!
