What do the Plebe Candidates do until classes start on Wednesday? Anybody know? I'm assuming its not the same schedule as Indoc.

They'll finally get a LITTLE free time, but not much. My plebe year, after Indoc, we got our computers, got our books (along with the upperclassmen, who return on Sunday) and had to start stowing our rooms. The store was also open on Monday and they gave us time to buy school supplies. They'll still be cleaning and all of that stuff too. If the CTO's are feeling up to it, they'll probably go practice more drill or whatnot. Don't worry. . . they'll still be busy.

This year, I guess they already have their computers. Also, I'm pretty sure my plebe year that classes started on Tuesday and not Wednesday, so we had less time to do more stuff. They started this whole Wednesday thing my 3/C year (which meant that a lot of us sat around with nothing to do since they wouldn't let us go on lib). Same thing last year and now this year too.

Hello sir,

I presume you are a first classmen? What does stowing mean? And, when they have free time - what can they do? I am guessing they are not supposed to sleep! Although I am imagining that some might like to. But it is good to know there is life after INDOC, but believe me I have been sufficiently warned that it is a very BUSY HARD life. Thank you for the post.

supersusan,

Yes, I am a first classmen (or will be when I dreadfully step foot back on campus tomorrow).

Stowing their gear (nautical term) simply means organizing things in their rooms, such as clothing, school supplies, books, etc... They should be tidy through Indoc, but when you're shuffling through drawers every day, all day, things tend to get disorganized.

The "free time" was basically just a chance for you to stow gear and get your books. If I recall correctly, we only had it in 45 minute bursts or so. It really just depends on what's happening that day and how they decide to organize who goes where and when. Indoc will officially run through Sunday evening and the CTO's (company training officers, who the candidates will come to know VERY well) pretty much have full reign by Monday morning. At this point, the DI's will essentially be gone, since they have their own school preparations to make. Like I said, we also used the time between Indoc and classes to get our computers (sidenote: expect LOTS of email and/or IM's at that time), but I saw that this year, they got them during Indoc. The training staff may also take the plebes for some PT or drill practice. Now that I think about it, we really didn't get much "free" time. The normal, weekday routine will start Wednesday.

And no, free time was not for sleeping. They'll be allowed to go to bed at 2200 every night.

Plebe year was by far the busiest for me during this stretch, from having to get everything and generally figuring out what is going on. The last two years (and I suspect this year will be no different) I have sat around with friends watching movies for two days before classes start. Somewhere in there, I got my books and organized my room, but that was it. I am not sure why they pushed back classes one day, but my plebe year we started on Tuesday.

Your thoughtful reply was most appreciated. As I have no direct experience with any service academies this has been a roller coaster ride the past 16 days. I will look forward to those e-mails and it is good know my son will have many upperclassmen whose footsteps he can follow. Thanks again.

Ya to some kids it might be a little nerve wracking when all the upper class comeback cause by this time in indoc they really only know the DIs and no one else so in some respects its a little...uhhhh...when the DIs leave. Monday and Tuesday will probably suck for them, who knows what they're going to do. Yea bed at 10pm up at 6 am....until they're recognized I think.

During free time you can surf the internet...do hw...workout...lots of things...not!

Thank you all for sharing what's going on. We too have been on that indoc rollercoaster and are having a difficult time trying to guess what is going on. We look forward to addtional correspondance from our new plebe candidate, and even more to acceptance day weekend!

I want to add my thanks for replying. Its still very strange not to know what my son is doing! I still feel like he is at camp and will be coming home at the end of the summer! lol

I just dropped my 3/c mid off at noon today. He was moaning all the way up 95! When we got into spitting distance, he started calling his buds. Then when we pulled into the parking lot, they started yelling out of the window! "Hey, nice hat, what's that on your face! (He hadn't shaved in six weeks!)" He was smiling in no time and after I went to get him something to eat, he told me to tell all of you "plebe parents" not to worry. He said, "I will be sure to look after them mom and if any want me to check up on them, just let me know their names and I will make sure they are ok." So there it is! He hates KP, but he also loves it! So my s is in 4th Co. I know alot of you on this website have plebe candidates in 4th Co. You can pm me.

HA kathynp - touche!! read my post - posted at the exact same time... sorry we missed you.

MMAMOM2011--I was just thinking the same thing--read your post and responded God, I'm glad it's 2008 and not 2007--Never before have I wished to be a year older!

truthfully, this next term at least will be about like the first time a cowboy mans up and ties onto a mad bull. you'll get rocked in ways that you didn't expect. just hang on and wait for the whistle to blow. if i can make it this far, you can too.

is2day- point well taken...in PM, it was agreed that this is one of the high points of the rollercoaster and we were relishing the moment. We agreed to buckle up for the fast slide DOWN. Ugh. . . hate that part.
