He had his interview with the NROTC officer about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday he called and told us about being given an ISD. He faxed papers over for us to sign and send back. From what I understand each state is given a "x" number of ISD's to hand out. The state NROTC board makes that decision I believe. He never told my son about the ISD until yesterday. I didn't even know what one was until yesterday LOL.

Once again, congratulations to your son and thanks for the reply. I am hoping my son is being considered for an ISD. He had his interview last week and was waiting for his counselor to finish send the transcripts, etc. The recruiter told him to try and get everyting in by today so he could get his file reviewed ASAP. Hopefully, he was impressed enough to consider him for an ISD?

They do reviews every 2 weeks I heard. They had my son send his in asap also to beat the oct sat rush. Good luck!

I received at response from the Lieutenant who interviewed me for NROTC. I quote "ISD is a tool that every recruiting district can use to deliver a scholarship to 10 students who are extremely well qualified and sitting on the fence as to what program to take of the 3 branches of service (Army, Air Force, and Navy/Marine Coprs)....If we offer a student an ISD, we expect them to take that, even over the Academy...Different recruiting districts do it different ways. Some follow the instruction, as I feel we as a Navy must, others do not and just hand them out to the first ten that qualify."

The Lietuenant gave me a very good recommendation, but, like many here, I would have liked to have been in the running for an ISD just to cover all of my bases. I DO get the impression that this particular Lieutenant (who is was not accepted by the Academy and got his commission through ROTC) may be a tad bit biased. I still feel very good about the interview, and I think I have a strong chance for a NROTC scholarship.

Doug

Doug, it does sound like the Lieutenant may be just throwing out words to keep from having to issue you an ISD. The LT that interviewed me knew I had applied to the Academy, but he seemed impressed by my desire to become an officer and said that he wanted to make sure I had one of the first opportunities. Maybe they have already met their quota, tough to say. I received mine a month or so ago, so it's quite possible they may not be issuing any more. You certainly sound like you're qualified for it, but don't let it get you down. You'll almost definitely receive the scholarship, it just may be a bit later than you were anticipating. Remember, it's the Navy. ;-)

Thanks Navgirl.

The Lieutenant who interviewed me also knew that my ultimate goal was to become a Naval Officer. I'll go to Naps, Foundation, NROTC, anything! Obviously, I will not turn down an Academy education over NROTC. The Lieutenant wasn't sure, but he thought all 10 of our District ISD's had been given out at the time I interviewed. I'll find out this week.

Doug

Well, I've found not that ROTC graduates hate academy guys, but they seem to only call them "ringtappers" and not much more than that so...

Hi guys,
It's ring knockers....that's what USNA grads are called.

Last year, 150 applicants were awarded the Marine option NROTC scholarship. 75 awarded from the early board and 75 from the National Board. The early board this year met on Monday, November 15th. In the past, for every eight navy scholarships awarded, only one is awarded for Marine option. Also, ISD is only for navy option NROTC, not Marine option.

JuniorMom,
You might want to have the AP test scores sent anyway. If you son gets into the Academy, they will have a bearing on what classes he takes. AP's alone aren't used for placement, but they can determine whether you can take the Academy's tests for validation. My son ended up validating English 1 because of the 5 he got on the AP Lang and Comp test and then was able to take the upper level Calculus exams because of his AP score on BC Calc. He's currently finishing up Calc III and now he has the opportunity to take the Statistics validation test because of his AP Stat score. If he validates that test, he's done with Math by the end of his Plebe year (he's going to major in History). Any classes they can validate helps them down the road.
Good luck to your son!

Midmom....we just sent them and thanks. He's taking three more right now but those won't go until July....Thanks...JM

midmom- I am nearly positive I've heard ringtappers used, but I don't think that's the point...

I think "ringtappers" refers to West Point graduates.

Woot! My GySgt came to my school today and told me that I was awarded the Marine Option NROTC Scholarship!! I'm soooooooo excited! But this just makes my decision all that much harder... I'm waiting to hear from Georgetown on December 15.

Way to go Marines4me!
