NSLC Journalism and Mass Communication Camp at UC Berkeley

I am new to College Confidential, and I am glad to be in an online community with college-bound students like me.

I was invited to attend the National Student Leadership Program for this summer. I was excited to read the course offerings and the student testimonials. NSLC is a summer enrichment program for high school students which offers 1-2 week camps in forensic science, journalism, engineering, politics, and even a business management camp in Geneva. My parents were supportive of this, and I sent in the paperwork to NSLC. I got accepted into the program, so the only thing remaining is waiting for the end of July for the program.

I chose the journalism and mass communications program because that is my focus for my career. The program will help me learn more about the industry and get hands-on experience in broadcasting and photography. I'm aiming for colleges like Boston U, Syracuse, and NYU, as well as UW as a school closer to home for their wonderful journalism programs.

Has anyone else heard of NSLC? What were your impressions of the program if you went there, and what can I expect there?

I’ve heard that it is a “money guzzler” and not prestigious at all, but you definitely will have a good time there and learn many things :]

What grade are you in?

I’m currently a junior.

Thanks for ensuring I’ll have a good time. I’m a bit worried that you said the program is a “money-guzzler”. I hope colleges won’t rub application the wrong way for me being in the program.

It’s definitely better than having nothing at all and it shows that you did something over the summer.

It won’t hurt your application, but just know that colleges already know about these programs and their ‘reputation’ (if you can pay, then you can go). There’s tons of them out there: NSLC, NYLC, CYLC, CSLC, NYLF, etc.

If you’ve already sent in your app and paid, just go and have a fun time. Some of my friends have went and they said they learned a lot and had an awesome time meeting new people etc.

Here’s a forum search with some useful threads. [College Confidential - Search Results](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=21271442&pp=15)

Don’t get down because of what some people say. These programs tend to have a bad rep on CC (along with the “pay to go to Africa and build a well” programs), but you’ll be fine.

Thans, fairy_dreams. I won’t be let down because it seems like a good boost for my journalism career path and college admission. I’m sure it would be very valuable.

Whoops, I gave you a broken link. [College Confidential - Search Results](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=21274917)

Have a fun time :]

The link says that there are no matches for the search.

Again? That’s odd.

Well, I’m sure you can do it yourself. Go to the Summer Forum page and do a search (control + f) for “Search this Forum”. Click that box and type in whatever you want to search (eg: NSLC).

Okay. Thank you for telling me.

I am going to be attending the same program. I have heard some good stuff about the NSLC and I am very excited about taking part in it. Whether it’s a “money-guzzler” or not, I’m sure this will be a great experience. See you there. =)
