For those who either have kids going to China Summer or are going to China Summer: How good is your Mandarin? My dad’s Chinese but I can barely say anything ^_^;

China iEarn in Zhuhai!!! I’m SO EXCITED. :)

Edit: I have absolutely no experience in Chinese whatsoever.

Just search “iEarn China Summer 2012”!

I’m not in iEarn… I’m in the program that’s either Anshan, Changdu or Changzhou. I forget what it’s called ^_^; AFS or something.

My son just won China year! My only hesitation is the housing. I didn’t expect for the students to be attending a residential school. I wonder what that will be like.

Dd got morocco summer today. She can’t go. Someone on the waiting list will be happy.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using CC

That’s too bad! What was her other option? Well, she will make an alternate very happy. My daughter will participate in the summer Chinese program and her younger brother has been offered the Chinese year program. We’re thinking about it…

she actually turned down the FUSY (summer in Finland) and the NSLIY (summer in Morocco). This was a tough decision for her, but she also got into the LEAD SBI at Penn. Penn is one of her top choices for college, so together we agreed that if she got into LEAD, she would do it. She was pretty bummed to give up the international programs, but she will try next summer and hope to get something in the time before she goes to college. I guess it’s better to have choices than to not have any choices. It’s just painful to have to decide between such great programs. They all sound so interesting. Plus, she’s from Maui (a small, little, boring island), so the international programs are soooo far off the “normal” student experience. That’s one reason she wanted to do them. Maybe next time…

My son is taking a “gap year” between 10th and 11th grade to spend a year at a Chinese boarding school intensively studying Chinese through NSLI-Y.

Apollo6: So is your son repeating 11th grade after he comes back from China? My brother was interested in doing the same thing, but my family wasn’t sure how that would impact his schooling back in America…

Well, he isn’t exactly repeating 11th grade since he will only be studying Chinese in China. He won’t be studying math, science, English etc. He is changing his graduation year to 2015 from 2014. My D did the same thing in 2009 when she took a year off to be a RYE student. Schools don’t encourage you to do it but it’s your choice as a parent. It’s not a big deal.

What is RYE?

Hey guys, has anyone created a Facebook group for AFS China Summer? If not, I can make one I think it would be cool to have one ^_^

Hey BobbyJo. I’m also going to China this Summer with AFS. A facebook group would be great :)

livegreen: Awesome! I’ll make one by Friday and post it!

RYE is Rotary Youth Exchange. It is a great exchange program for high school students that offers a year abroad at up to 50 countries for a low cost. Contact your local Rotary Club for more information.

I think there is already a Facebook AFS China summer. I saw it on NSLI-Y ExchangesConnect.

Oh, they already have one? I’ll look into it then.
Is anyone going to the conference call tonight? I ammmm. :D

Hey BobbyJo,
I just looked it up and there is already a facebook group for AFS. Its called NSLI-Y AFS China Summer 2012.

livegreen: Did you go to the conference call? (i’m actually listening right now haha). Someone mentioned it but I can’t find it on FB :’(

Never mind- I found the page- but what’s up with the whole Visa situation? If you live outside of the NY jursidiction, what happens…? Just wait until further instruction?
