NSLI-Y 2014-2015 (2012-2013 are welcome to put their input )

If you really want to go exchange, definitely apply to other programs. AFS is great, I nearly went with them for my exchange to Spain (didn’t b/c they only offer year to Spain, and my school only let me do a semester). Keep in mind though that normal AFS programs are VERY different than NSLIY. You’ll be in a host family the entire time and most likely be the only exchange student in your school, which will be a local school. You might be the only American in your town. There’s usually no structured language lessons unless you seek them out. AFS is more about the complete cultural immersion rather than language learning. Also, AFS is reallllyyy expensive.

You mentioned wanting to go to Indonesia, have you heard about YES? Like NSLIY, but for Muslim countries. Runs like a normal exchange program, for many countries you’d be part of the AFS program there. Indonesia’s an option!

There’s a third scholarship program to Germany, CBYX too.

If you want to get really pumped about learning Indonesian (and mastering various martial arts), watch The Raid Redemption (and get hyped for The Raid 2 Berandal). Amazing film, no joke. Watch it^^

I just got an email about the Arabic summer program! I am an Alternate. Does anybody else know what they are? What are the chances of going from an Alternate to a finalist?

Nothing yet, Still waiting for Korea…

GOING TO OMAN!!!

@dizzyworld
Congratulations! ^^

@marielephant
You still have a pretty good chance if you’re alternate. A lot of the time people apply and they don’t think they’ll get in but they do only to find that it’ll conflict with new plans they’ve made. I know that last year 2 or 3 people on CC were alternates and they ended up going ^^
Don’t give up just yet! :)

My daughter was accepted for Arabic in Morocco!

Is anyone going to Jordan, or are they not offering Jordan this year?

@Julia–thanks!

@HillOfFlame-- yes, people are going to Jordan
