NSLI-Y 2014-2015 (2012-2013 are welcome to put their input )

Congrats! Where are you going? I’m planning on applying to Arabic summer for next year. And thanks for the info!

I’m going to Oman this summer. Arabic is the second most competitive, so good luck on your application!

I’m applying for the Korea Summer Program for 2014 ! I wanted to know, which languages are the most competitive? and what is the most important part of your application?

Hi, I will be a junior next year and I want to apply for the summer NSLI-Y program of 2014! I love languages in general but I am passionate about Russian. I have taught myself basic Russian, go to Russian markets where I live to talk to the native who owns it, and I have become friends with several people in Russia through pen pal websites, as well as a bunch of people in other countries. I have taught myself basic Spanish, French, and German. I think that this program is perfect for me  I want to help stop human trafficking when I get older and my target region is Eastern Europe, so knowing Russian would be a huge asset!
My question is like almost everyone else’s here haha… i want to know what the most popular programs are! For me my choices are:

  1. Russian 2. Turkish 3. Arabic 4. Persian 5. Hindi 6. Mandarin 7. Korean
I think that the Asian languages are very popular, and probably Arabic, but does anyone have an idea? Im so excited for the apps to come out ahhh!
    Thanks!

@xxhoopsluverxxChinese is the most competitive, along with Korean and Arabic. I’m applying for the Summer Korean Program for 2014 and i’m also soooooo excited for the apps to come!!

Does anyone have any tips for applications?

I also applied to CIEE South Korea, but sadly I got waitlisted :(

Can’t wait to apply to NSLIY though! And I remember seeing a wordpress online with application tips to several study abroad progrmas

^^ yeah that was the one I saw

Hi, I’m going to be a junior next year and I really want to do one of the summer 2014 programs, I can’t wait until the apps come out. After college I really want to go in to the foreign service to be a diplomat so this would be perfect. My #1 language choice is Arabic; because a lot of my friends speak it (it’s their 1st language) and I am just so intrigued in addition to that my dad does a lot of work in the middle east. My other choices would be turkish, and then hindi. I just love learning about other cultures and I think would be so cool.

Does anyone have any tips??

Hello everyone!
I’m applying for the 2014 year long Korean program and was wondering if anyone else is. I’m a senior this school year and want to squeeze in a gap year before I go to college ^^ (I’m a youngster in my grade so, I just turned 17 a few months ago -.-) I haven’t submitted my application yet, I’m so nervous I’ll mess it up! >.< I hope to be a foreign language translator and have been experimenting with different languages. I think I’ve settled on Korean
Now that you’ve heard my life story (pretty much) anyone want to talk? What programs are you guys applying to (or have applied to)? Would love to hear from other applicants! ^^

I’m a senior and applying for a full year Korea gap year too! I want to be a linguist and have been studying German, French, and Korean. I applied last year too, but didn’t get in so I’m really paranoid about applying this year XD Almost done with the application though! I’m going to apply to the Kennedy-Lugar YES program and Congress-Bundestag as well. Hwaiting! ^^

Hi!
That’s so cool! I’ve studied French at my school but, I don’t think my skills are good enough to study there ^^" And I barely started my application >.<
I hope you get in this year!! :D

I am also applying to the Korean academic year! I am a sophomore and this is my first time applying. I am hoping to teach English abroad, Korea being my top choice. Good luck to everyone applying! :)

Purplecandy- Did you become a semi-finalist last year?

No I didn’t :frowning: I’m hoping for better luck this year

Awh, that stinks. Good luck this year though! :D

AHHH, Arabic ftw. Hope we all get in. Just wondering who else on this thread is interested in the Arabic program. And does anyone have a letter they want to share?

Oh yeah, is it preferred if you have a job? Don’t have one yet :frowning: (Applying as a sophomore)

Does anyone know which languages are most competitive to get into?

Going to ask my French teacher to write me a reccomendation letter this Monday! I have NO idea why I’m so nervous! >.<

goodnoodle - I heard somewhere that the Arabic, Korean, and Chinese programs are the most popular, but I assume that all the programs are pretty competitive :stuck_out_tongue: Which language were you going to apply for?

zanelias - I’ve never had a job before and I don’t think that it matters, but would probably be a good example of responsibility. I don’t have a job either :(

I was thinking of applying for Turkish so It’s good to hear that that’s not AS competitive.
