NSLI-Y 2014-2015 (2012-2013 are welcome to put their input )

That’s awesome! You should totally apply ^^
I’m applying to study Korean so, I’m pretty much headed to a fight to the death haha ^^"

^Any reason why Korean? I’m picking Turkish because I’m part Turkish and want to know my language, I can blend in relatively well since I look like everyone else lol, and because Arabic is just a lot more common and easy to learn in more conventional means (at college, etc.)

Well, I plan on being a linguist/some sort of translator and I’ve chosen East Asian languages with an emphasis in Korean (for when I go to college). I actually have no ties to Korea other than my best friend being half Korean ^^" And if I went to Korea I’d stick out like a sore thumb since I happen to be Native American haha :)

I’ve always had an interest in foreign languages (I know the basics of Navajo, French, and Japanese as well as Korean). I guess I just chose Korea because I love the culture and think the language is beautiful ^^

Got my application in about a week ago. What can I say, I like to be prepared! I applied to

 1. Arabic (aller au Maroc, parce-que je parle francais!)
 2. Turkish
 3. Korean

A nice teacher wrote a very good letter for me, and everything due in November is in the mail!

Aspiring to be a diplomat for the US and thought this would be a good experience. Everyone on the thread seems nice and I hope you all get in!

^^^^Same, I hope to work at the UN one day. Till then I’ll be battling it out with the other Arabic program applicants, but I think my essays are sound and show my passion well.

My order of preference is Korean, Chinese, and then Arabic, so now I’m getting nervous since those are the most competitive XD Well, my application’s in, I’m proud of my essays, and even if I don’t get in I’m happy that I tried my best  Good luck to everyone! ^^

I’m so lazy in getting this app done, does anyone have tips on how to shorten the essays? All of mine are wayyyyyyyy too long.

Hey! I’m Turkish and I plan on applying to study in Turkey. Do they prefer people who do not know the language at all or those that have some background?

(I posted in this thread before, but not since February)

I’m applying to Arabic, with Turkish and Persian ranked second and third. All summer.

About the ‘which program is the most competitive’ question, the number of spots per program are relative to the number of applicants, so the acceptance rates are all roughly the same. (For example, with the summer programs, Chinese has by far the most spots, with several different implementing organizations, while Persian usually has 15ish spots and only one implementing organization).

My app’s ready, just so nervous to press ‘submit’! At least we don’t have to wait very long for semi-finalist notifications…

I’m just about to submit my app for 2014-2015 year program. I hope to get Russian, but Arabic and Chinese would be great too. I’m so nervous, but at least I don’t have long to wait! I love how on other NSLI-Y College Confidential boards from years past, people were so supportive and helpful! I hope that happens this year, best of luck to everyone.

Hello: Applying first for Arabic, then Turkish, then Persian. Does anyone know how competitive the summer program is compared to the yearlong program?

Wow. Just submitted my application at 1 in the morning the day before the deadline! Talk about procrastination! xD And I actually feel pretty confident about my essays ^^ (though I may have used the word ‘passion’ one too many times…)
HOPEFULLY I get accepted, this will be my only chance to go to Korea as a high school exchange student since I’m a senior >.<
UGH. SO NERVOUS!!! D:

I submitted my app but then they extended the deadline. Wow. Goodluck to everyone who needed the extra time.

Applied for Arabic summer program this past weekend! My (very competitive) parents are worried that the program is irrelevant to my college major since I want to be an engineer. (Awkward, I have few science activities outside of school haha…)

If I get in, I’m definitely going, but do you know if this program viewed highly by colleges? Might help appease the elders.

Haha @InFlux5 that year there were about 2500 applicants for 600 spots, our year has 6000 applicants…
But that year almost everyone on the thread got in, so that’s good. Hope that’s true for us as well. Does anyone know if they’re going to look at grades that much?

Oh well finally I’ve found a more recent forum on the exchange program. I felt as thought I should’ve been more patient with my application, but I think I’m satisfied (Though I wish I expanded on my ideas as to what I plan to do with going abroad and how will i use the experience to benefit me and all that jazz). To be honest, I was so excited that I submitted my app at least by the third week of September.
But i wish I applied for more diversed countries.
I did South Korea (year), Chinese (year), and then South Korea (Summer)
I wish I changed my last choice to Spain ><

We’re supposed to start hearing feedback in Decemeber-ish right? Or is it later? ‘-’

@influx, 1) Where did you here that? I’m on several exchange forums/Fb groups, and I’ve never seen or heard that number. That would be double last year, which seems slightly improbable. 2) I don’t see how the competitiveness should change how supportive people are…

@5riginal–Spain/Spanish isn’t offered… And yes, notifications will finish before Xmas (last year they started Nov 30th and ended about Dec 20th

And whoever asked about grades, I’ve heard of people with all types of grades who got in. They matter, but way less then essays/recs do. Also, my (and other people’s guess) is that they would care much more about a bad language class grade then a bad math grade, for example. They’re mainly looking for people who are passionate, can handle studying abroad, show dedication etc.

@dizzyworld. I agree with you. I have no clue where the 6000 came from… That seems like a bit too many! And, I wouldn’t care if every high school student in the US applied, I’d be supportive of everyone! We all know what it’s like to want to scholarship so bad.

I don’t know why, but I woke up this morning SUPER nervous about my application. I think I’m stressing too much about useless details I didn’t include :stuck_out_tongue:
Anyone else on the thread apply for first choice South Korea? Or anyone else a little nervous now that everything’s been submitted? ^^

Oh, I know that feeling!! I’m so anxious for the semi-fianalist notifications that it’s just killing me!!!
