NSLI-Y 2014-2015 (2012-2013 are welcome to put their input )

California semi finalist. Anyone know what percentage of applicants become semi finalists

yay got my semi letter today (1st: Turkish 2nd: Arabic 3rd: any (all summer))….was about to cry - From GA

today a bunch of states were notified… i know for sure FL was cause my friend lives there :)

Don’t worry if you haven’t received an email yet! They are still sending out notifications until the end of December.

Does anyone know if MA heard back yet? I’m SO nervous I can’t even explain it. Good luck to everyone!

and how about Il?

^Yes, applicants in those states have been notified. However don’t worry because they will be continuously sending out waves of notifications

Just got my semifinalist email today! From PA by the way. I applied for Korean, Chinese, and then any, all Summer. Good job to everybody!

Anyone with past experience have any interview tips?

Anyone know if Washington state or Connecticut applicants have been notified?

I know that some people in WA have been notified… don’t know about Connecticut though

Has anyone in New Hampshire been notified yet?

i know everyone is getting notified… but im still nervous!
do you know why some semifinalists are notified later than others (i know theyre going by state… but new york sf’s are being notified a few at a time…)?
im assuming it means they’re still deliberating if you havent been emailed back…

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how soon semi-finalists will get notified about interviews? I’m so excited to finally be a semi-finalist after two years of failure…

Btw, my languages are Korean, Chinese, Arabic all summer.

^definitely by the end of december
nsli on twitter keeps telling everyone to stay calm - everyone will be notified in december

a helpful answer on twitter too:
@NSLIY I’m just curious…why are some applicants getting e-mails before others?
REPLY: Rolling notification process; mostly administrative purposes.

so i guess hope isn’t lost if you haven’t been notified yet. don’t worry guys!

Just got back from my interview. Lots of people were being interviewed.

I am from Pittsburgh and haven’t heard yet. Should I worry? Felt my application was very strong.

@firefly–how did it go??? are you in nyc or dc?

@Dizzyworld
I’m from DC. It went well. All the other candidates were really nice, and NSLI-Y alumni were in the waiting room to answer any questions. Many people were applying to Hindi or Arabic, and most people had Turkish as an alternative language. Only two people were applying to Chinese and no one was applying to Russian. That might just be where I live/my time slot though.

We were interviewed by nonNSLI-Y people. They had a list of questions to ask us, half of which we had already answered in our essays. None of the questions were really unique. They were just stereotypical interview questions. We interviewed for 30 min- 50 min and then they brought in my parents, so my mom and dad could ask questions.

I got a nice message from someone asking if I had heard anything since my last post today. I do not post enough on CC to be able to reply to private messages but I hope you will check back on this thread. I haven’t heard anything. I turned in my app about a month and a half early, and I wonder if it is possible that affected it. Or maybe I didn’t make it. Who knows. Whether I do or don’t, I plan to have a wonderful summer. I was offered a job teaching music to kids, and was asked to come back to a pre-college music program for cello. (At CMU–I’m from Pittsburgh). So while I would love to spend my summer abroad above all, I really want to have a positive outlook no matter the result
Hope I helped.
Tess

firefly12345, im from dc too, how did the interview go? I am also a semifinalist, but havent gotten my interview date yet. Do you think those were all the semifinalists there?

Disclaimer: These are random thoughts that have popped into my head the past few days that have to do with NSLI-Y.

Does anyone know about the NSLI-Y facebook group?
I’ve been hearing in different online forums that there’s a more active facebook community out there but, I haven’t found anything yet @.@ If anyone’s heard about this or is a part of the group, let me know please ^^

I haven’t gotten my interview date yet, I have a feeling that my interview will probably be somewhere towards the end of January/beginning of February. And most likely on Skype or over the phone since, I haven’t heard of any other NSLI-Y applicants in my state. :/

And I know I’m only a semi finalist and still have a while to go before I can REALLY get excited about this trip but, after making it through the first round, my confidence is through the roof! I never thought in a million years that I’d ever even be considered for something like this and after so many years of wanting to experience foreign exchange, at the last possible moment, I applied and am glad I did. ^^
Sorry, for this little rambling section, stuff like this has been on my mind for the past few days x)
