NSLI-Y 2014-2015 (2012-2013 are welcome to put their input )

Does anyone have any idea how many people apply for this scholarship and how many people get it? I’m applying for the China summer trip which I’m assuming is one of the most popular, but I don’t even know how many people that means.

im not 100% sure but i’ve heard that last year 3000 people applied and 600 scholarships were awarded.

I think about 15% of applicants go on any given summer trip. China and Arabic summer have the most applicants, but also the most slots so the ratio is the same as like Persian summer. If you make semi-finalist though (which actually has nothing to do with the program you chose. They mostly look at your essays here) your chances go up to like 40%. You can even change around your choices before February if you make semi-finalist, since your program choice has no bearing on if you’re chosen as a semi or not.

If they have more applicants, they up the number of slots, so You still have the same chance of going.

Serious babyexotic?!?!?!? you don’t how much you’ve made my day. I’d give you a hug if I knew you. Awmahgawd feel so much better now.

It’s no problem! I totally felt your panic when I found out though omg x__x
so what programs did everyone apply for? I applied for Korean Year, Chinese Year, and then Arabic Year (which of course are the most competitive, why didn’t i realize this before I applied omg). Also, is there any other semis that haven’t heard back about interviews yet? Because I’ve heard rumors of the DC interview taking place this sunday and I haven’t heard back even though I got my email last week… a;lkdsjfkljds so nervous

If so then I am out of the running. One person from my state received notification. Can anyone confirm.

RaggedyCharly posted: “a member of an applicant group on Facebook has received confirmation from staff at NSLI-Y that notifications are done by state”

If this is true and it is regardless of program applied for, then this is very bad news for us.

@mman5247 Yeah, I’m starting to agree with you. I haven’t received any notification of being accepted nor declined of becoming a semi-finalist… I’m from NY and if all the notices already went out. I’m wondering if it’s even a good thing that I haven’t received anything. They began sending those out last week right? And if they finished sending notifications to NY, NJ, etc. I should receive /something/ eventually… (hopefully it doesn’t get lost in the mail or something since the holidays are coming up ^^;;)

Someone actually wished me luck here, and thanks to that person, lol. But I would just like to receive something already just so I don’t get my hopes too high up if at worse case scenario I’m not accepted.

Both semi-finalist and non-semi-finalist letters are sent out at the same time right? Like it’s not sent out /after/ all the semi-finalists have received their notifications, right?
Good luck to those who have gotten’ your semi-finalist notices already. ^^
Did you guys get it via e-mail? or mail?

Anyways, i tried logging onto my account on the website, and it seems that there’s no trace of my app. That’s to be expected right?

I can’t answer all of your questions but I can answer a few!

First, semifinalist notifications come through email. Finalist is email and mail.

Secondly, if you are not accepted, they email you AFTER everyone who has been accepted has been notified.

Also, my application is still showing up for me…

Don’t give up hope yet. We don’t really know exactly how they send the emails out. Nothing is sure until you actually get an email.

Good luck everyone and try not to fret too much. You’ll get an email one way or another. :D

My daughter just received notification this afternoon that she is a semi finalist, in Kentucky. She is so excited! Any others in the Midwest?

SEMIFINALIST FROM TEXAS, I CAN’T STOP SHAKING applied for the Arabic!!

What percent of semi finalists become finalists?

I think Texas started hearing today.

SEMIFINALIST!!!

from nyc, first choice Arabic summer! (then turkish, then persian :)

Woo! Just got my semifinalist email today! I have a bit of a cold at the moment (during finals ugh -.-) so, this cheered me up a bit ^^
I’m from New Mexico so, I guess the southwest is getting their emails now
I applied for Korean Year, Korean Summer, and Chinese Year (in that order)
Also, you have the best username babyexoticelf, I too am quite the kpop fangirl ;)

Congratulations to everyone whose gotten semifinalist notices today!

Dizzyworld, I have the exact same choices as you!

So many Arabic applicants. Looks like there will be some competition. :)

@firefly–whoo! and yep, but there’s also way more Arabic spots than, say, Persian or Hindi, so the competitiveness of each of everything is about the same.

I’m from California and I got my email earlier today~!
Soooooo excited!
Applied for China summer as my main choice. Hope I get in xD
Best of luck to all of you guys~
Don’t know when I’m supposed to be interviewed yet though :stuck_out_tongue:
Hope it’ll be soon :D

When do you think Colorado will find out for semifinalists?? Im applying for the summer Arabic program and I really really want to get in!!

@Dizzyworld, that’s true. After all there are three countries for Arabic, so there have to be a decent amount of spots.

Does anyone else have an interview this weekend? I’m so nervous.

Ahh so what states have been notified so far?
