NSLI-Y 2017 - 2018

ahh it’s just registering with me now that Russian finalists could hear from NSLI-Y within the next few days! I’m so anxious now @-) Good luck to y’all over the next few weeks!!

Hey guys, so what happens when/if you get a finalist notification? I read somewhere that there is a seven day window to respond for summer and 14 for year. I’m asking because I will be in Belize March 14-21. From what I read on this forum and others, Arabic summer is released around that time. I’m just wondering because I don’t want to be at risk of missing a deadline for anything.

I will also be out of the country for a couple of weeks mid-March, so I am in the same boat. I think as long as you have access to wifi you should be fine. Good luck, and have fun in Belize!

The wait feels like forever aha just kinda preoccupying my mind with school and friends.
-A hopeful Korean summer applicant.

Is there any system for city placement (like language experience, etc)? Or are cities randomly chosen? Can you choose what city you get placed in?

@noegip I know for Russian Summer they choose the location based on prior language experience. You don’t get to choose your location for any of the programs

@amaevillas As long as you have an internet connection you should be all good!

Good luck to you all!

I’m so nervous! I heard somewhere that the Russian finalist notifications might come out today, but I’m not sure how accurate that is. People last year heard back on February 29th through March 2nd, right?

@gmwilson yes omg i’m scared because I know that Hindi and Russian summers will probably come out sometime this week. I just want to know!!!

Has anyone who has applied for Russian or Hindi this summer heard back yet? I know it’s a little early but I’m so anxious. Also, do people ever receive their second choice program?

@gmwilson nah, I haven’t heard back yet (Hindi summer applicant here). definitely very scared of opening up this chat room tomorrow sometime and finding that I haven’t gotten an email but everyone else has heard back… life is hard ;))

@nadinerahim that’s my biggest fear as well. I’m also worried that I won’t get any emails within the next few days but I’ll still be holding on to hope until April 1st.

@slang4201 thanks! For Russian Summer, do you know what level of language experience corresponds with which city?

@noegip All I know is that those with no experience go to Kirov… I know there is also a program in Moscow and some other places but I’m really not sure how it’s determined outside of that

Waiting for China notification: one month to go

@slang4201 Thanks for the info

@noegip from what I can tell, Kirov is for absolute beginners, Moscow is either for absolute beginners or those with a little bit of experience, Chisinau in Moldova is for those with beginner-intermediate experience, and Narva in Estonia is for advanced. BUT I have also heard that this changes every year.

Any day now! Who else has Russian summer as their first choice, and what is your experience level?

I do! I would definitely say beginner here
What about you? @marieamne

Beginner. I’ve studied some Russian on my own (like the alphabet, some very basic stuff that you can google). @northeastgirl24

I also have Russian as my first choice. I know the alphabet and some basic vocabulary and grammar but not much. I keep refreshing my email every ten seconds ;)) I’m so nervous.
