@pineapple86 The dates would vary based upon the county and notification date, but here is out experience for frame of reference.
My son went to China last summer. He was noticed that he was a finalist on 3/28 by email. We had to sign and send electronically his acceptance to his spot by 4/1 and a color copy of his passport. On 3/29 we got an email from the organization organizing his trip setting a mandatory webinar for 3/31. During the webinar they went over the next steps which included properly completing the visa application and heath insurance application forms. The organization also quickly arranged transportation to where predeparture orientation is held. (Locations vary). My son’s group met at the U. Of Minnesota. Shortly after that weekly homework began! There weee several more webinars and the program was excellent on keeping in contact and providing more detailed information such as itineraries as the travel date approached.
If anyone here applied to YES Abroad we have a facebook group. Look up K-L YES Abroad 2017-2018. I am a semifinalist for Chinese Academic Year for nsliy as well!!! There is also a facebook group.
I missed the deadline to apply since I learned about this program in December, but I want to apply next year (currently a junior). Are there any alumni on this forum that would be willing to share their experience?
Hey guys. I know each and every one of us has anxiously been waiting for “early march to late april” to come, so I did some research for all of us! I looked through the 15/16 thread and came upon the following conclusions, timeline wise:
those dates are when the very FIRST notifications came out. if you don’t get one that day, it’s okay. don’t freak out! these notifications are not concrete and are sent out on a rolling basis. this list of dates is just to give you a general idea of when most notifications for programs are sent out!
rejection emails are sent out after all the summer notifications are sent out. in 2016, all the rejection emails were received on April 1st.
year programs all come out after all of the summer programs are sent out. in 2016, i found that the Russian year applicants first received emails on April 7th. The second group was the Arabic year which came on April 11th. But, again, NSLI-Y isn’t a program that sends notifications out on a set date. Understand that emails are just sent at different times (consider how many they need to send out and they also have to do a different email for each CITY for each COUNTRY)
you can be selected as an alternate. being selected as an alternate just means that you are wait-listed
good luck to you all i didn’t know notifications came out so soon. time is moving by really quickly, it feels like just yesterday i got my semifinalist notification! just keep a positive attitude and know everything happens for the best i’m a hindi summer semifinalist so if there are any others out there plz contact me! i don’t think i’ve come upon one other person in this chat that is also a SF for the hindi summer… please get me in contact with them! i don’t have a facebook so maybe i’m just missing out.
GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE YOU ALL ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS. that is all. goodnight <3
@nadinerahim Um, Korean summer came out March 31 last year. No one, in any group chat or fb group that I know of, received an acceptance before then. (Jeonju and Seoul were released then, but idk about Songdo)
Hey guys I did the Russian summer program last year so if y’all have any questions or anything feel free to ask. Also I received my notification on March 2nd I believe.
@slang4201 what was your level of Russian when you started? How about afterward? What city were you in? Sorry for all the questions I’m planning on applying for Russia next summer.
@Kastelano Before the program I spoke no Russian at all, but by the end I was fairly good and I could hold a conversation fairly easily… the amount of progress I made in six weeks was crazy. I was in Kirov, which is where they generally send you when you don’t have any prior Russian experience
Yes this is driving me crazy! I have to plan summer camps and some of them require DS18 (Nsli-y hopeful) to drive DS20 so I really need to know if DS18 will be available or not. I don’t want to put down non-refundable deposits to camps but spots are filling up - it’s making me crazy!
@amaevillas I don’t believe that programs like this practice any form of seniority. I don’t think they prioritize older students over younger ones, they just pick the ones they feel are the most mature and reasonable applicants! Good luck to you, I’m a SF and a sophomore…
