Nursing Schools

I about to apply to a bunch of nursing schools. Can someone tell me if I have a good chance of getting into UPitt, Northeastern, Boston College, Emory, UD, and Cornell Nursing programs Also, does anyone know of any easier nursing schools to get into (for more safeties)? In addition, would it be better to apply Early Action (EA) or Regular Decision (RD) for these schools? I would prefer not to do Early DecisioN (ED) for any school.

ACT score: 34
SAT score: 1490 (780 math, 710 reading) and I’m taking it again in October
GPA: 4.18
AP classes taken: AP US History (4), AP Psychology (5), AP Calculus AB (2), AP Chemistry (4), and I am going to take AP Biology, AP Calculus BC, and AP Environmental Science this year.

I have taken 4 honors English courses, 3 years of French (one year of honors), two honors social studies, two honors maths, 4 religion courses (one year of honors), a web page design class, an online journalism class, and four honors science class (biology, chemistry, organic chem, & physics)

I have done an average amount of volunteer work (about 120 hours) and I will be the head of one of the biggest service clubs at my high school (we raise about $10,000 for the Ronald McDonald House each year).

I also play varsity volleyball, as well as club volleyball year round. My high school was named one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in America so I hope that helps when colleges look at my application (will it? I don’t really know).

Also, subquestion: My grandmother is from China so technically I am 25% asian, but she married an irish man and my mom (their daughter) married a very irish man too so I am pretty pale and don’t look of-asian descent. Should I select “Asian” under the ethnicities tabs or will it not make a difference?

Your credentials and ECs and course selection / rigor look pretty good so far. What about GPA? That’s a key criteria for most any program. I would swap out AP Calc BC for AP Stats if you can. Usually Stats is a required nursing course and Calculus isn’t. You can probably find online the 4-year plans for your top schools to see what they require. You can probably also find a link to the mappings of AP/DE courses to that 4 year plan to see what qualifies for what. It’s recommended to file EA as many schools require applying early to be eligible for maximum merit scholarship consideration.

Feel free to browse through the many good threads in this forum to learn all you can about applying to nursing programs. This one in particular you may find useful http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/nursing-major/2039571-class-of-2022-nursing-admissions.html#latest

It appears that Cornell stopped offering nursing in 1979. Add some safeties.

Emory is not a direct admit program. You have the statistics to concentrate on direct admit programs. Apply EA to all direct nursing programs if possible. The following is a list of direct admit programs that I copied from a previous CC post:

Is there a way we can change Ohio State? It was confirmed this admission season that it is no longer direct admit for anyone.

Not sure how to edit to REMOVE OSU. Thank you for clarifying @bearcatfan. I will repost this without OSU:

In answer to an original question. checking off Asian will not help you because it is not an under-represented minority. For highly selective universities, some Asian applicants do not check off any background because they are fearful of reverse discrimination. That is not a factor at most colleges.

Another good direct admit nursing school is Case Western Reserve University. Looking at you stats and the schools you listed I would say you will get into the majority of the schools you apply to. Good luck! Another more safety/target school would be Ohio State university. They have a great nursing program.

Good luck this fall applying!

I would consider UPenn. It is the most competitive program in nation. I would also consider going Early Decision. It does make a difference.

I will disagree a bit with @Charliesch and say it might be useful to say you are Asian if you consider yourself such. I’m not going to judge percentages or anything, that’s up to you. My daughters are both 100 percent Asian.

Many nursing programs are looking for diversity, including males, and may do admissions differently than the university as a whole. I am of the opinion that you are who you are, no sense in hiding it. My daughter can’t hide it, obviously, so she went with it. It could have been a factor in her admissions, since most of the places she considered had tiny Asian populations to begin with. She was also tapped for several diversity opportunities. Again, percentages might matter but who knows.

Bearcat: yes, I’m used to colleges on the East Coast that have large numbers of students with an Asian background. It may be different in the heartland.

Check and see if nursing is a 4 year program or a 5 year program at the schools that you are applying to. I know that Illinois Wesleyan is a 5 year program since I know someone who went though it. Five year will cost you more. Also when does the school start practical experience? Millikin starts freshman year. By placing students in their field (nursing, classroom etc) you get a better idea if this is what you really want to do and if not, you have time to change majors.
