The Marriott is across the street, and if I can recall correctly, my daughter’s friend did unifieds and also went to NYU that same weekend for an audition.

purple…Wagner has only ONE audition date each year and it does not coordinate with Unifieds. Last year it was on March 1 and it is around that time of year every year. It is past when NYC Unifieds are held.

It’s possible to audition for NYU at the same time as unifieds, but audition spots fill up early. Keep checking their website. When NYU opens up the audition reservation process, act quickly.

You might not be able to register for other schools’ unified slots as early as you can register for the NYU audition (NYU doesn’t require that your application be processed before you make your reservation, as a lot of schools do). It would probably be a good idea to schedule your NYU audition just before or just after the main unifieds, so you don’t end up with a conflict.

NYU holds audition over a long period of time (last year their auditions started in November). They have to, because of the huge numbers auditioning.

For any of you with past experience, how many auditions should a student do during Unifieds or in this case Unifieds plus other NYC schools. I read somewhere that doing more than 4 could wipe them out, making it physically impossible to audition at top performance. Can I have replies from those who might have that information? Thank you.

We found two auditions / schools a day about right. One day my D did three and that was ok but not ideal. At the Unifieds in LA (and I expect at all cities) there are often two calls for the same school - 1 for dance and 1 for singing and monologues. Also D had a separate time when she was asked back for an interview at one school.

I went to Chicago Unifieds last year, and with some early scheduling, I managed to do 3 each day . It was exhausting, but I didn’t have much of a choice because traveling to each of the schools would have been out of our price range. It’s definitely do-able though, especially for the schools that do not require a dance call, as those appointments usually last 10-15 minutes and then you are done. However, for your sanity’s sake, I would not recommend doing more than 3 each day.

Thank you Oregon mom and Music is Life for your real life wisdom. Keep it coming from others please.

Music is LIfe you brought up a point I never considered, those with and without dance auditions. So it might be do-able to do 2 auditions consisting of voice/monologue/dance and then one other for voice/monologue with out dance?

There are many hotels within walking distance but obviously the Crowne Plaza is the ideal choice as it is in the same building as the Unifieds. It’s a great hotel.
Also very close by are, The Renaissance, The Marriot Marquis, The Edison, The Sheraton, The W, The Westin, The Michelangelo, to name just a few. Hotel rooms can vary tremendously in NYC so do your research well. Price ranges also vary, understandably, and sometimes what seems to be a bargain is not a good choice. I’m sure there’s a thread about this from this past audition season, and probably one for each year, so a search might be worthwhile. A lot of people have given their input through the years.

My D did three auditions a day at NYC Unifieds and found it absolutely fine. She wasn’t too tired or stressed out. She did, however, manage to space them out during the day so she wasn’t having to rush from one to another, which would add a lot of stress. In addition, she is very focused during auditions, so she didn’t socialize a lot with the other kids: when she wasn’t auditioning or waiting to audition, we went back to our room and relaxed.

It worked out really well for my kid, but I would caution you that Unifieds are held at a time of year when viruses and colds abound, and if you get sick, well … My kid was fortunate that she stayed healthy throughout the entire audition season (well, I did have to run out to the closest Duane Reade to get Mucinex one morning of Unifieds and she did regularly use a neti pot) but again, that was just good fortune.

The main issue is how long the auditions are. My D auditioned for some schools at unifieds that had auditions in the 10-20 minute range (Hartt, UArts, Roosevelt, Otterbein) and others that had separate vocal/monologue auditions and dance calls (CCM, BoCo, Point Park). In addition, her NYC unifieds trip included auditions off-site for Pace and CMU, where you set aside a 3-4 hour block of time.

If all her auditions were like the first group (Hartt etc) she probably could’ve done six in a day and not been too stressed. But, of course, that’s not the way it works! I will admit that scheduling can be difficult. We had to request several time changes to make it all work. My best advice is to get your applications and audition requests in early; then be prepared to juggle things. My D had 10 schools on her final list. She had to go to NYC for Pace. We decided two days in NYC was too short to do all 10 auditions, so we went to NYC and LA for unifieds. It worked well for us.

I also recommend leaving plenty of time between auditions to keep stress levels down. It gives your kid time to recover and it leaves a buffer for when auditions are running late, or for when they keep your kid in for longer than the scheduled time (always a nice problem!).

Paramount Hotel right around the corner. Very small but functional rooms. Our rates last year were incredible (around $100/night) booked through the hotel NOT Expedia. We did 8 auditions in 5 days with no problem. CMU and Emerson the 2 days preceeding Unifieds, then 3 short no dance auditions one day and 2 with dance the next. Lastly she did NYU Monday morning and flew home that afternoon. Everything was smooth and with very little stress. Lots of down time to chill in between. Most of all-STAY HEALTHY. Do all the little tricks on the plane etc, to stay well-avoid anyone with a cold the few weeks before you go and keep your hands washed!LOL
Good luck and enjoy this amazing experience with your child.

I can not say if it is typical or not but BOCO’s singing and acting audition lasts about 15 minutes and the dance audition about an hour. The dance audition is pretty exhilarating so I would recommend at least a 15 minute cool down.

I believe this tip was mentioned before but get there early and set up your auditions. Most likely the dance audition will be in multiple groups and you may be able to pick your time slot.

I would also audition at as many schools as possible in order to minimize the amount at Unifieds.
