NYU Abu Dhabi

I believe someone mentioned this in an earlier post, but i do notice that this has become more of a forum for opinions on NYU AD rather than a place for potential students to discuss it. I just received an acceptance from NYU AD, full ride, and i guess I’m just hoping to hear some input from any other potential students or people involved on how they feel about it all. I honestly get the feeling that they’re trying to bribe every person that’s going with promises of prestige and boatloads of monetary enticements. I have this looming feeling that if i actually attend, it will be the equivalent of marrying a seemingly attractive partner to discover in actuality that they are a serial rapist. Thoughts?

I was accepted full ride to NYUAD as well and am fairly certain that I’ll be attending in the fall. And I suppose it goes without saying for me, I don’t think that NYU Abu Dhabi will turn out to be any sort of metaphorical serial rapist!

I think it’s unfair to denounce as bribery the incredible opportunity that NYUAD is offering its first class of admitted students. Sure, they’re offering the students as much as they possibly can, but isn’t that essentially what every college tries to do every year? And NYUAD is offering a lot - a faculty-to-student ratio below 3:1, incredible travel opportunities many times a semester, a chance to be a part of an amazing student body - all for free. The way I see it, there’s just so much to take advantage of.

One of the people I met at Candidate Weekend described going to NYUAD as a high-risk, high-reward venture, and I suppose it is. I think you have to be a certain type of person to want to attend; somebody who’s willing to take that leap of faith into the ridiculously wealthy unknown.

(And money is obviously a huge factor. Colleges in the US simply can’t offer what NYUAD is this first year because they’ve been hit hard by the recession, but at this point Abu Dhabi is practically untouchable. I don’t think there’s a single institution out there that can give you for free what NYUAD is offering.)

I KNOW, it’s just so chock full of opportunity and free stuff. I’m honestly just trying to get rid of the feeling that it’s all too good to be true.

Not to mention, i wish the vacation periods weren’t so short…

I was accepted into NYUAD with a full ride. I’m bit nervous because we would be the cute little guinea pigs in an experiment that could go terribly wrong. But then again, as notamushroom said, this is a high-risk, high-reward venture and it all depends one what you will make out of it.

As for me, I think I’m going to go.

Congrats on your admissions, everyone.

I’ve posted this here (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/892246-if-youre-applicant-candidate-nyu-abu-dhabi-nyu-local-wants-hear-you.html</a>), but I’ll repost it again:

I’m Nicole from NYULocal.com, a student blog that covers anything NYU-related, including you guys:

We’re interested in talking to students that applied to NYUAD, especially the ones that have gone to the Candidates’ Weekends and such. If you’re one of these people, it’d be great if you can email me and be interviewed for post. My email is nicole.he@nyulocal.com. Hope to hear from you soon.

I said I wasn’t an NYUAD student before because I didn’t want to jinx it, but now I am.

Simply put, I’m going and everything is amazing. I never thought that I would have this kind of opportunity for an adventure straight out of high school, and I’m extremely lucky and grateful that NYUAD and I found each other.

Exactly. I’ll see you in the UAE!

I’m going to be a science professor at NYU Abu Dhabi next fall (I’m a member of the Standing Faculty, meaning that I will be based primarily in Abu Dhabi) and was wondering if any of you had any questions any the program there, in science or anything else. Thanks

I am also attending NYU Abu Dhabi next fall (freethefork, funk, and not a mushroom) and I honestly cannot see a negative to the NYU campus. I mean much needed monetary backing, a free campus, the added prestige and a ridiculous amount of potential doesn’t seem like a bad thing.
nyuadprof- I was wondering what percentage of the faculty would actually be tenured and standing faculty as apposed to the “visiting” and associate faculty?

Brett5175: The fraction of courses taught by standing vs. affiliated faculty varies greatly from department to department. In the Sciences, Junior and Tenured Standing Faculty will teach a vast majority of the courses. The same is likely to be true for Engineering. In the Arts and Humanities, I honestly don’t know - I’m a science professor, so most of my attention has been paid to getting the Science curriculum and courses up and running.

As far as Tenure vs. Associate (Junior) faculty, most Standing Faculty initially hired (like me) were for junior (tenure-track, not tenured) positions. There are several Standing Faculty with tenure . The NYU Affiliated Faculty are in general tenured.

nyuadprof, do you happen to know anything about how the math curriculum will play out in conjunction with the Courant-Track program they’ve set up for math majors?

withrustling: I don’t know much about the Courant-Track program, but I can find out more for you. What specifically are you interested in (e.g, what are the required courses, etc.)? Feel free to email me or send me a private message if you want to take this off the board.

On a related note, I’ve noticed that this board - and others related to NYU Abu Dhabi - have gotten very quiet lately. I hope this is because admissions deadlines have come and gone, and not because you are worried I’m spying on you. (I’m not. I have not discussed, nor will I discuss, anything I’ve read here with any one else at NYU Abu Dhabi. To paraphrase a cheesy ad campaign - “What is said on College Confidential stays on College Confidential.”) I joined College Confidential because, at several Admissions events, parents and prospective students were talking about it and I was curious what it was. If you feel that my presence here inhibits any frank discussion of NYU Abu Dhabi, please let me know - I’m more than happy to stop reading this and related boards and will only reply to question sent to me via Private Messages and / or the Email option.

nyuadprof, I’m thinking about applying next year (I’m a junior this year) and I’m thinking about math also. I’m just concerned that grad schools wouldn’t take nyuad seriously. There also seems to be a lack of advanced math courses and the core curriculum seems to take too long to complete. Could you shed some light on this?

And also, I don’t think that you’re “spying” or inhibiting discussion. I just think nyuad is a new college and not many people are interested in it as of yet.

@zhangxy, i share some of those same concerns, though i am curious what you mean when you say “lack of advanced math courses”. Due to obvious class size limitations, they won’t be offering anything above a generic calculus series (I-IIII) the first year. However, the outline for the math program includes topology, analysis, number theory etc. So idk, what else did you have in mind?

@withrustling - idk I was thinking of a lack of graduate classes, but I suppose there wouldn’t be any graduate classes at any liberal arts college anyway. I suppose nyuad would ideally lead to nyu courant which is still a wonderful math program. I just have a feeling I might be underprepared for other graduate programs. The financial aid incentives and the cultural experiences are the big driving factors but I just feel it might jeopardize grad school chances, that’s all.

if it helps, the nyuad website says:

“NYU’s most selective graduate and professional schools in New York will offer special consideration to NYU Abu Dhabi students who apply to these schools for graduate education. This special consideration recognizes the distinctiveness of an NYU Abu Dhabi education and the exceptional talent of the students who will enroll at NYU Abu Dhabi’s World’s Honors College. Participating schools will award scholarships covering full tuition for their studies to a select number of qualifying NYU Abu Dhabi graduates.”

it goes on to talk about how admissions officers from each school will help undergrad students take advantage of these opportunities, make choices, ect.

[NYU Abu Dhabi Graduate Study Opportunities](http://nyuad.nyu.edu/academics/grad.study.html)

Well, we don’t have any grad courses because we have not even had our first undergraduate class complete our first year lol.
I think they are also planning to have grad programs and our degree will be the same degree that NYU students receive which means that as long as schools would consider a NYU undergrad degree then they will take our undergrad degree seriously as well.
I think that the lack of commenting on this board is because the admissions process is already complete and all of us are on the facebook group chatting it up haha (also, I would say that over 9000 applicants the first year would qualify for some interest; most people that I know don’t use college confidential at all)
Thanks Professor!

Brett, how do i find this facebook group? I am legitimately having trouble getting to this.

when you submitted your confirmation they should have sent you an email inviting you to the group because I don’t think it will show up in the search engines.
One problem you might have is if your main email is different from the one that you use on facebook.
