Hi, I am currently a CAS freshmen.
I am doing the joint major of Econ and Math, aka Econ theory, right now.
I came to NYU with 26 AP credits, so I skipped out of a lot of MAP courses here.
People told me that if I want to do the joint major of Math and Econ, I should move ahead of others. So, I took a lot of hard classes this fall and this was such a huge mistake. I took Calc III, Econ Analysis, which is known as one of the hardest courses, and some required courses. These classes were really hard, and I ended up screwing my GPA.
I got B in Calc III and B+ in Econ Analysis. My overall GPA for the fall came out as 3.25. My lowest letter grade so far is B.
During the fall, I became interested in transferring to Stern, cuz they have the major that I want to do. But, since I flunked out of the first semester, I have to wait another year to transfer to Stern. I've heard that in order to transfer to Stern within NYU, you have to have 3.8 for your GPA. I calculated my GPA after my sophomore year fall semester, assuming I will get 4.0 for next two semesters, which will less likely happen. And my GPA came out as 3.73. Does this mean that I won't have any chance to get into Stern just because I flunked out of my freshmen year fall semester? I am so mad at myself for taking such hard classes and screwing my chance .

first, you didn’t “flunk out”. “flunking out” would mean you FAILED a course. and since your lowest grade was a B, no, you did not flunk. don’t be so hard on yourself. like you said, you still have a few semesters to bolster your GPA.

as for transfer to Stern- you might as well give it a shot. you’re already in CAS Econ, which is great. you don’t have anything to lose for trying to transfer to Stern after a few semesters. you might get in- if you look at the NYU board, there was one poster who transferred to Stern from CAS and i don’t think they had a 3.8, either. at this point, you have nothing to lose but time and effort.

you’ll take so many classes in four years that your early semester will not trip you up down the road. so don’t feel so bad! if B is flunking out, then i’m screwed, because i’ve gotten multiple B- grades before i hit my stride and started getting As and A-s.

i would say, go for it! good luck!

I am taking ‘easier’ math and econ courses this semester, like linear algebra and statistics. Stat is one of the required courses in order to transfer to Stern and the required course that I am taking right now is also the pre-requisite to transfer to Stern. However, most of my courses are easier compared to the one that I took last semester. I am hoping to have a high GPA this semester. But, do you think that I am lowering my chances to get into Stern because I lowered the course levels?
