I have some questions about NYU’s
artistic review process. I know you shouldn’t do early decesion unless you’re prepared. But does early decesion increase your chances? Does regular decesion decrease your chances? Also, NYU only has early decesion auditions in New York?
Early decision isn’t just for if you are prepared, it’s also for those who are 100% sure that if they are accepted via early decision that they can attend the school. Scholarships from ED applications usually aren’t very high, because the odds are tipped in the favor of the school. When you apply ED, you are also signing a contract of commitment that you will attend if accepted. Few exceptions are made based on financial need to relinquish someone from that contract (I know a gal who was permitted to rescind her ED application from another school for financial reasons).
Additionally, you still won’t know your studio assignments until April when they are released for everyone (unless you indicate something like ONLY the MT studio).
Sometimes NYU aid isn’t all that generous anyway (although, there are always exceptions which I’m sure some will chime in).
NYU ED auditions are indeed only in NY.
My D is at NYU - and they tell prospective students NOT to do ED unless you are CERTAIN you can/will attend NYU without additional aide (beyond need based) and regardless of studio placement (as noted above- you can say “MT only” but cannot specify an acting studio)
NYU was always D’s 1st choice- and I joke that I could have saved myself a LOT of grey hair if we had gone for ED. It was really studio placement that made D hesitate. There were certain ones that did not appeal to her in HS- though she says now- she would have accepted any studio, because they all have interesting/cool features- and you do have the opportunity to study in other studios during your time at NYU.
BTW- you can audition ED2 (which notify in Feb?) from Chicago unifies - D had a friend do that
It really is too bad that they changed the policy re: studio assignments and now the kids have to wait until April. When my D applied ED, they received the studio assignment with the admissions decision and actually studio placement was a part of the discussion at the interview. I wonder why they changed that.
Studio placement was part of discussion at D’s interview too. Fortunately she had attended the summer program in HS, which gave her a chance to “experience” many of the studios (she was in NSB program- but they had a week where you went to a different studio everyday) and felt she could speak to what she liked etc - which led to her eventual placement in her top choice of studio (though she didn’t know it until April)
