NYU ED and Studio Questions

I got a campus tour of NYU yesterday and I thought that NYU was right for me. I’ve heard and lot of good things about NYU.
I want to apply Early Decision for NYU next year, but I’m not sure because if I apply ED, will I have to audition for NY?
I was thinking that the audition in LA for Regular decision will give me more time to prepare and I’m worried about getting sick on my way over to NY.

Also, lets say that I apply ED, and I got my second choice studio, will I still have to go or will I have a choice then?

And what studio choice I choose as my second choice?
I know that CAP21 is the only studio for MT, but don’t some other studios also offer some training that could help in the field of MT?

I'm thinking your question may have a typo and that you are actually asking if you will have to audition IN New York if you apply ED. Is that your question? If that is question, then yes, if you apply ED, you must audition in NYC. That is not the case if you apply RD, however. You could audition in CA.

Yes, RD does give you more time to prepare. The big difference between ED and RD is that ED is a binding commitment and RD is not. Also, RD gives you more time to explore all schools, visit/audition, weigh options and compare, weigh financial aid offers, etc. ED is a fine option if you have already fully explored all schools you are considering, have done some visits, are ready to make a binding commitment, do not need to weigh financial aid offers, and would be ready with regard to the application and audition process in early fall of senior year.

The issue of getting sick on your way to NYC....I don't quite get. The chance of getting sick is there no matter where you audition or when. The only time I think you can weigh a difference when it comes to sickness is that if you audition at Unifieds for many schools and you get sick, a lot is riding on the line in one weekend. That is one advantage of campus auditions in that if you are sick, only one school is on the line at a given time. But none of this relates to the situation you are presenting.

ED is a BINDING agreement. PLEASE understand that. If you are accepted to a college in an ED process, you have committed to attend (you will have signed such a commitment when applying ED). In the case of NYU, if you are ONLY willing to accept ONE studio, and no others, then in the ED round, you may say "CAP21 or nothing" and you will only be considered for CAP21 and if they can't accept you, you will be denied to NYU/Tisch. The other option is to give CAP21 as your first choice studio, and then provide a second and third choice studio. This does NOT (let me repeat NOT) diminish your odds at getting CAP21. It simply means if you are not accepted into CAP21, you may still be considered for another studio at NYU, rather than automatic denial. However, you are bound to attend NYU if you get your second or third choice studio. No, you cannot back out because you did not get the studio you hoped for. If that is your gut feeling, then you should either apply ED and say "CAP21 only" and only be considered for that or else not attend, OR apply RD and see what happens and weigh your college offers at that time.

I cannot tell you which studio to select as a second choice. What I HIGHLY suggest is to fully explore the curriculum at each of the other 7 studios. Try to contact students or faculty in those studios if you have more questions. Once you have familiarized yourself with those studios, see which may appeal to you. Also, remember, you are just choosing a primary studio for two years and after that, can audition to do a different studio. While I am not just suggesting these studios, I will mention that there is some singing and some dance in Strasberg, Playwrights Horizons, and Experimental Theatre Wing. These will not be LIKE CAP21 but offer some voice and some dance. As well, you can sign up to take private voice lessons for credit no matter your studio (not the same as the CAP21 voice teachers....different list). As well, no matter your studio, you can audition for musicals at Tisch and many who are cast in musicals are from studios others than CAP21.

I hope this helps.

I know you posted awhile ago, but maybe you'll still see this...

I am starting Tisch this fall and did/have done A LOT of studio/admission research.

As for applying ED, if NYU is your #1 school, definitely do it. I knew that NYU was the only place for me, and I cannot stress too much how great it is to already be in. In terms of preparation, as long as you decide when to apply soon, you have plenty of time to get ready before November, which is when ED auditions are.

I think the best second choice studio for kids who want CAP21 as their #1 is Playwrights Horizons. It is sort of like the "general theatre studio" in that you take acting, music, dance, tech, and directing for a year before choosing a concentration. Most kids in it already know that they're actors, but I have heard it said that Playwrights prepares its students best for the "real world" because they know how to do everything.
