NYU Fall 2020 Transfer

@seabee91 Man that sucks for me lol. I totally would have taken online classes if i could

Hi lovely friends! I have been always dreaming about transferring to NYU almost since the same time I attended college! Can’t believe that the new run of application has really come to us! Here are my stats:

Status: International student (Asian, more specifically)

Current school & major: Top80 U, Communication major

Intended major at NYU: Media, Culture and Communication (pertains to Steinhardt)

High school GPA: 3.7

Credits before entering new school: Around 60

College GPA: 3.92 (Dean’s list)

ECs:

Student media (photographer and illustrator for a women’s magazine)

Photography club (staff member)

Asia-pacific culture club (core member, running PR routines)

U.S. local oral history organization (volunteer to conduct, edit interviews)

Social service NGO in my home country (volunteer to establish online platform to publicize sexual health knowledge for female workers, also help to start an oral history project for female workers)

Oral history project on village culture in my home country (volunteer to synthesize raw interview materials into readable products)

NGO on gender and sex in my home country (co-creator of social media contents)

Summer seminar of oral history studies in Taiwan

Please rate my chance and let me know any of your thoughts, advice, or confusion and I’ll share mine without reservation too! Also, I have some questions about the transfer process, please let me know what’s your sense of them:

  1. Should I include my high school EC? I have two that I kind of take pride of, but I think it's somehow childish to put up: an International prize for making short public-service video; Top 10 Leader of Student Council.
  2. Are transfer credits exclusively given for liberal arts and unrestricted elective courses? Steinhardt's website says they "...awards credit for courses taken at other accredited two- and four-year institutions with grades of C or better that satisfy the requirements for specific liberal arts courses and unrestricted electives in the degree program for which you have applied." Does this mean that students can't earn transfer credits for major requirements? I emailed many offices at NYU and all of them said they won't provide any counseling on transfer credits before the decision is made:(
  3. My TOEFL score is not the most impressive one. It's only 101, a little bit higher than the NYU requirement which is 100. I took it one year ago before I entered college. I didn't do SAT for some reasons so there's no way to waive TOEFL. Do you guys think it's necessary to redo TOEFL, or just let it be since my college coursework speaks for my language proficiency?

Let’s do our best in the application! Hoping to see everyone in New York City!

I thought the ddl is March right ?

@rielele nope April 1 if I am not mistaken

Hi guys! I’m looking to apply to NYU Stern. I got a 1320 on the SAT after retakes this year (same score as I got in high school), but I got a 5 in AP Psych, 4 in AP Macro, 4 in AP Gov. Should I submit my AP scores in lieu of my SAT score?

I’m considering taking the SAT once more in case my score does improve.

I hope to get into Stern, but I’m currently taking Philosophy, which is loosely related to my major (Marketing). My professor has a thick European accent and an abyssal teaching style. I think the highest grade I can get is a C. I have straight A’s in my other classes. Do you think my C will interfere with my chances of admittance?

@georgiam34 if you submit AP scores in lieu of SAT you need at least one of them to be maths or science (in general for NYU), and for Stern in particular one needs to be math.

@SJ2727 I got a 3 on AP Calculus AB examination. Should I submit that score in addition to my 5 from AP Psychology and 4 in Macroeconomics or submit my 1320 SAT score?

@georgiam34 can I be blunt? A 3 on an AP is not going to help you for NYU. For Stern, I am not even sure 4s would. A 1320 is below the 25th percentile for NYU so it’s also not really helpful. I’m sure you know it is extremely competitive to transfer into Stern from outside NYU. I know some transfer students are eligible to have standardized scores waived, have you checked the requirements for that? Your college record seems excellent, and I’m thinking if you can get more focus on that it would improve your chances.

@georgiam34 if this applies to you, then don’t worry about your SAT score. This is straight from the NYU transfer information page:

“Standardized Testing must be submitted if you have not already completed at least one year of full-time study at a college or university or 32-semester credits of part-time study at the point of application. Certain programs do not require testing, so be sure to review our policy in detail.”

Hey everyone!

I’m currently in the midst of preparing to write my essays/writing supplements. On the CommonApp, it states that the maximum length of the first one (Why NYU) is 2500 words. Are you guys planning to write a lengthy response for this question? (ex. 1000-2000 words) I know for first year students, the response was 400 characters.

Hey guys I have a question, if you apply to NYU previous semester and get rejected can you apply again the next semester?? I’ve heard from someone who did that but others say you can’t. So I am a bit confused.

Hi. I got rejected for 2020 spring too and the common app doesn’t let me apply for fall now. Guess we have to wait until 2021 spring.

@loverose4565 but I saw someone said that the application will open later on… I sent an email to the admissions office. Really hope we could reapply TAT

@yxy0756 same i hope so too, but does it mean we have to make a new common app account to reapply?

@loverose4565 They replied my email saying they added me to a reapply list. It seems we have to ask them for a reapplication form and submit that form through NYU’s portal.

@yxy0756 thank you for letting me know  and Merry Christmas.

Hi everyone, nice to see that someone started the thread. Does anybody know how competitive the interactive media arts major is?

Transferring from California CC
CAS Econ
Currently 3.71 GPA, hopefully raising for mid term report next semester

ECs:

President Model UN
Board Member local UN Association chapter
Honor Society
200+ hours international volunteer work
2 internships before college

Just a heads up, if you have 32 credits COMPLETED (not in-progress) at the time you submit your application (as opposed to having 32 credits by the time you enroll), then you DO NOT need to submit standardized testing.

Hope this is a relief for some of you guys =)
