NYU Freshman Answering Questions

AP scores are usually released around the third week of July in my experience. However, starting on July 1, you can call the college board to get your AP scores, but you’ll have to pay $8 (for an automated service) to get them, payable by credit or debit only :)

@chasingclouds

They should have given them out during Admitted Students weekend, but they hand out paraphernalia during orientation as well so maybe they’ll have a shirt.

@lavidaloca44

My advice is forget about the past, do what you can to make your situation better in the future. As long as you don’t have a felony on your record, grades can be explained. It definitely won’t be favorable for your admission decision but any kind of upward trend is a good trend.

No real sense of community at NYU. It’s harder to make friends and hang out compared to a campus college. It’s a school with 20,000+ ppl, so not everybody knows each other. Even kids who were here since frosh year are still making friends, so you should find your own little group.

Call up CollegeBoard. It’ll cost around $8 I think.

@Jackhammer25, thanks so much for your input! :)

if I apply for ED1, is it possible to send in my first quarter senior grades? I think it will help my application/show more of my upward trend for grades.
thanks :)

@cali1219

NYU accepts any kind of senior quarter/semester grades. Just have your school send it in.

Hey is an Econ major at CAS much different from an Econ major at stern? Are the opportunities for a stern econ much better like people say? Plus do you know anyone who’s gotten any athletic pull with admissions before? I was just wondering lol thanks!

CAS Econ is more academic, whereas Stern Econ is more practical. So Stern’s is geared more for Wall Street and CAS is more about the concepts of Econ.

Frankly, majoring only in Econ at Stern isn’t worth it. Most people who major also double in something else. Typically Econ+Finance or Accounting, etc…

The recruiting at Stern in general is far superior. CAS pretty much gets no recruiting. Usually if CAS Econ kids want to get into Stern events, they stand out as being like 1 or 2 CAS kids surrounded by a ton of Sternies. Personally, I don’t think recruiting events do much to help your chances even if you’re in Stern since it’s basically just a flood of Asians trying to get their resumes to some overwhelmed recruiters. For CAS kids, it’s difficult because recruiters may wonder why you weren’t in Stern if you want to go on Wall Street. Chances are they won’t buy that notion of wanting an “well rounded” education.

Athletics at NYU is an absolute joke. I’ve heard it can help for certain sports, but this isn’t the SEC, ACC, or Big 10. Even if you’re good at sports, you need some sort of proven academic record. Maybe you don’t need to be elite, but you can’t be the bonehead football player just looking for a scholarship.

Hey, I was jst wondering if anyone actually goes to the freshman send-offs. Is it a good experience tht I shouldn’t miss. Wat exactly do they do there?? Did you go to urs?? Thnx

Yeah I went. It’s just an opportunity to hang out at some rich person’s house tbh. You’ll do the first time handshake thing and all…and then forget everyone two days later. It has no significance, just a group meeting try and get ppl pumped about going to NYU.

hey jackhammer25—on your first semester of freshman year, what meal plan did you have?
And what does 175 flex mean, is that the same as 10 meals per week?
Do you think that 14 meals a week is too much and boring?
Thanks in advance for you reply! :-)

I did the 175 flex plan. The flex means you get 175 meals for the entire semester. It costs the same as the 10 meals a week so you could say they’re equivalent. The meal plan you get should be based on lifestyle. If you know you’re never going to go out and get food, then get the 14 meals a week. Personally, I got tired of the dining hall food pretty quickly.

Since you’re international, I’m guessing you have $$$, so you’ll find yourself going out with friends to get some lunch or dinner more often then you think. There’s inexpensive places all around NYU.

If you read my earlier posts, you’ll see which dining halls I think are decent. But in general, dining hall food can get monotonous and boring, so it’s nice to take a break from it once in a while.

Hello!
I got into Stern, and I’m trying to find a laptop to buy. I have my eyes set on some Dells, but they’re both 17 inches and weigh about 9 pounds. I planned on bringing it to class with me, and I was wondering if you knew anyone who had issues bringing around laptops that are so big, and whether you would recommend against it and why.

jackhammer25 —Thank you for your reply, —

so 175 flex and 10 meals are the same, it cost the same per semester which is $1995, but what is dining dollars? how come the dining dollars for 175 flex is $150 and the 10 meals per week is $250?
I know I can email the dining for explanation but I think since you are the student your answer will be practical if you know what I mean?
Thank you in advance for your reply and patience!

Hello jackhammer25 (sorry its me again! Haha)

I’m looking to major in IR/ politics, and am thinking of minoring in either Econ/ bemt. I know Econ is technically the most ‘complementary’ minor, but could I get your opinion on the BEMT minor please?

Does the IR curriculum at NYU encompass plenty of Econ stuff?

intlstudent2012

The following links will help you understand the meal plan and the different terms like flexi meals, dining dollars etc.

@lizbette

Doesn’t matter what size, unless you need a big hard drive. For convenience, 13-15 in is easier to carry. People I know who had big laptops did other stuff with it where they needed to store stuff, so not just for classes. I don’t think it’s that bad though.

@intlstudent2016

Dining dollars are kind of like cash, but can be used at places around campus like Starbucks and other juice and coffee stores. Why one plan has more than the other, I’m not sure. Dining dollars are really useful for people who drink coffee everyday since you can use it at Starbucks and other coffee shops. A lot of people I know didn’t use it that much.

@chasingclouds

From what I’ve heard, it’s a nice minor. If you like the Entertainment industry, it could be an interesting minor. Minors don’t need to complement your major since it’s really for your own interest. There should be something describing it more floating around on the NYU Minor website.

I hear IR has some Game Theory in it and I’m assuming it has some Econ in it. Idk much else.

what is the social scene like? do i need a fake? where could i get one? also is there anyone from gallatin i could talk to?

It’s NYC so there’s basically anything you want. Of course, the one drawback of NYU is that it loses any kind of campus feel. So frats and sororities are nonexistent. If you want to party you have to go to bars, clubs, and house parties in apartments.

Partying and drinking in clubs and bars naturally requires a fake. Is it a necessity? No. Where could you get a fake? Any shady person or kid you meet at NYU. Not hard.

A lot of campus tour guides are Gallatin kids. Not sure what you’re expecting with this question.

Thanks for answering my first question jackhammer!

I was also wondering, is the NYU Campus Cash necessary? I mean, it’s just like a debit card, only it’s limited as to where you can use it. I already have a debit card, so my parents don’t feel like getting me the Campus Cash card, but I was wondering if there’s any benefit to a Campus cash card? Do most people get one?

Hey is it mandatory to have a photo taken AT the id center and use that picture as your id picture or can you upload a photo somewhere? :/
