Thanks for the response!

I don’t think so. You have to dorm in Polytech’s campus in Brooklyn.

Ah okay, thanks for the response! Also, if I’m admitted to Poly for Fall 2013, and the merger completes on time (before Sept. 2014) will my tuition rates be grandfathered or will I face increased costs and pay whatever NYU decides to make it?

So how did you get accepted into NYU? Do you have any advice to increase our chances?

@sashavb12

Positives: Excellent college GPA (big-time plus), TA position
Negatives: Below average SAT scores

NYU values college GPA a little more for transfers, but they still take SAT’s into account. Put some effort into the essays and you’ll give yourself the best shot possible.

@VelociPrime

Poly kids don’t dorm on NYU’s main campus. As of now, you can’t do an NYU CAS minor, but if this NYU-Poly merger takes place as planned (not a fan of this), then you’ll essentially be part of the regular NYU so may give you access to minors. Tuition rates I’m not sure about.

If you go to the first page, you’ll see a description I gave about myself including stats. Typically when you ask me to chance you, I’m assuming your GPA and standardized tests are done with. Otherwise, my first piece of advice would be to go all-out and try to increase your stats as best as possible.

The biggest thing you can control in the application process is the essays. Spend a lot of time on those for NYU and all other colleges you’re applying to. It’s your chance to show the admissions officer that you REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go here.

I’m guilty of this, but I think it’s important not to freak out and stay level-headed. Parents contribute to this to some degree. It’s so important to be focused when you’re doing applications since things like essays can be the difference between an admission or a rejection.

It’s pretty clear that the majority of admissions decision is based on stats (GPA, SAT, AP’s, etc…), but the value of good essays and supplements is underrated.

@jackhammer25 If I emailed you my essays, could you give me some feedback? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Yeah I could check them

@jackhammer25

For Stern applicants (ED), what do you think the average GPA is? And what do YOU personally think the realistically “lowest” GPA to be accepted will be.

I’m worried because I had a family problem in freshman year and I had to move across the country because of it.

So ya, my overall UW GPA is 3.5 , but 10-12 will be 3.8 . How do I stand? Thanks btw

It really depends on your school. Class rank or past student acceptances/rejections on something like a Naviance would be a much better indicator. You can never really say there is a bottom GPA because of things like extenuating circumstances, family legacy, donations, etc…

And I just read the bottom of your question for you to say you have a 3.5 unweighted. Is this honestly a serious question? Obviously a 3.5 is ok. I was prepared for you to say I have a 2.5-3.0 unweighted.

Hey jackhammer25,

Do you have any opinion on the “financial aid switch to 2014=acceptance” theory? I can’t believe a school like NYU would have any glitch that would give such an obvious hint of a decision, but a lot of people take it pretty seriously.

What do you think about it?

great question^

hear hear!

@aeisrael

Not exactly sure what this is. Care to explain and I’ll comment after?

Hi, upperclassman, I got in CAS Cinema Studies this year

But, my biggest concern is, will I be studying the same old Science/Math stuff as the core curriculum even though I’m planning to major Cinema Studies?

I have AP 5’s for Bio and Calculus if that helps any.

Also, where are good parties at? Gotta be aware of that lol.

@Jackhammer25
what aeisrael is referring to is a theory that those whose financial aid summary go from “No information available” to “2014 Award Access Not Available” are guaranteed admission. If you go on the thread following this, it seems to be 100% true, assuming everyone is telling the truth.

What are my chances in getting in through RD with an SAT score of 1930? And do you know when the results for RD will be out for NYU?

Is Steinhardt generally an easier school to get accepted to? I want to get into their comm program, but I’m afraid my gpa will be extremely detrimental…

Wanna rate my odds? (CAS)

2090 SAT (CR: 740, W: 740, M: 610)
750 SAT II (Lit)
5 on AP English literature and composition
A in an overseas Shakespearean study course
3.3 GPA
Legacy
Strong essays

Hi! I was accepted to NYU ED1 for Film and Television in Tisch. I’ve been looking at dorms ever since and right now I think my top choice is Hayden. I saw the NYU cribs episode (have you seen it? it’s great!) anyways and I wanted to know if you happened to know the style of dorm featured in the video. Or like what’s the difference between the “Shared Bedroom” option and the “Shared Studio” option?

BTW… here’s the link I’m referring to! (:

You’re exempt from Science requirements with the AP Bio 5 score. You’re probably exempt from the Math requirement also with the Calc score. Cinema studies obviously isn’t a place focused on quantitative courses. Some friends I have in Tisch doing Film have never taken a math/science class because of AP’s.

Good parties depends on your friends. If you have cool friends then you get cool parties. Typically the good parties happen in bars/clubs and occasionally a fraternity throws a good one. Everything changes week to week though. Depends. You’re in New York City. Woot Woot

P.S. Way to refer to me as an upperclassman. I’m guessing others know it but good catch anyway.

@mcskillitcat

That would be pretty sad if this were true. I think it’s already common knowledge that if you haven’t applied for Financial Aid you’ve already given yourself a slight leg up at NYU, but if they’re admitting it, that’s a new low.

@crystalgerl

You’ve given me no background about yourself. Which school are you applying to? GPA? A 1930 could get you into some schools and others not. RD decisions come out in April I believe.

@temperleylo

Yes, Steinhardt is generally regarded as being easier to get into. GPA is a bit more forgiving.

@kemppp

GPA is definitely your weakness here. SAT is ok and legacy helps. If it’s a strong legacy I’d give you a good shot.

@sidsquid

Hayden is an awesome party dorm. NYU Cribs is cool. Watch the I’m Shmacked if you liked that. Honestly, if I had to guess I’d say it’s a double (two people in a room). But I can’t be sure from the video it’s difficult to tell. Shared studio vs. shared bedroom is likely the difference between a room and a suite (quad style). Hayden is a great place to be freshman year.
