NYU Freshman Answering Questions

Last year, you were in Weinstein. Did you like Weinstein? Also, is the dorms as bad as I hear it is (the jail cell and the cinder-blocks) or is it not so bad? Just out of curiosity, where are you living now?

How is the substance-free?

I’m a parent, so I won’t comment on the social life of the dorms, but I will give my two cents about the Weinstein jail cell/ cinder block issue.

I have 2 D’s. One graduated last year from NYU, and the other is a freshman living at 3rd North.

She chose 3rd north because of its proximity to the Barney building and the fact that she did an explorations floor.

Older D was at Weinstein freshman year. The dorm space in Weinstein and 3rd north are very comparable in terms of actual private bedroom space. The issue of cinder block is totally ridiculous since the walls are painted the same off white color and you can’t nail things into either dorm’s walls anyway.

The biggest difference is whether you want a traditional dorm or one with a kitchen and common area. That is where you have the difference in space and room configuration. The rooms in Weinsten are not jail-cell like, but they do lack that communal area. However, you are paying more for that space. and you do not have the food options in the other dorms that you have in Weinstein.

@jackhammer25 hey Jack, I’m a junior right now and will likely be applying to NYU Stern (ED 1 or 2 [haven’t decided yet])

I got 2 Ds in Freshman year, but I retook them in Sophomore AND Junior year and received As in them both. One of the Ds was an AP class I took as a FRESHMAN (bad decision by me)

So do you think Stern will be forgiving in this situation? I have like a 3.48 UW, and 3.71 W btw

Also, do you think I’ll get in CAS econ. I applied as econ, mostly because I wanted to go to Stern, but since I don’t have the GPA or ACT scores for Stern, I applied to CAS as a econ major since it is the closest thing to business without the grades/scores needed for NYU. I have a 30 ACT and about a 3.5 (90) GPA. The only con, I think, is that my reading scores is so low. I have a 23 reading score on the ACT and an 85 (3.3) in my English classes. It’s just that everything else pulls me up.

For other people reading on the forum, I know I asked the question before, but there’s been rumors that a change in FA means that I’ve been accepted, and I haven’t seen a change in FA, even though I think I have the stats. I’m just anxious for April 1.

Weinstein is underrated. I know a lot of people who weren’t fans because of the cinderblock and smaller rooms, but it’s got good amenities. Dining hall, proximity to campus, Greenwich Village. It’s not as bad as its reputation makes it seem. Socially, it’s all what you make of it. Some people just want to be with the friends they have and others are open to making new ones. I’d say it’s not a party dorm like Hayden, but it depends on the people. No doubt the rooms are anything to brag about, but it’s fine.

I’m studying abroad now, but I lived in Palladium fall semester. Better rooms than Weinstein and a lot around it. Dining hall, Wasserman, gym, in the heart of Union Square, and fairly close to campus.

I can’t directly comment on this since I have no experience, but I hear it’s good. Personally, I think there’s enough people you can find that at NYU that stay sober. Just stay away from the frat scene.

@DullPencil

Freshman year is likely to least counted upon year, but Stern is a stats-based school. A “D” is a D when it comes down to it, but the fact that you re-took the class helps. I’m not trying to sugarcoat your chances, so just prepare for the worst, but put some time into those essays and explain what happened. Who knows there’s always mystery acceptances/rejections in the admissions process.

@J03421

NYU doesn’t admit based on major. They admit based on school (CAS). CAS is probably the second most competitive stats based school at NYU. Your GPA and ACT is on par with a standard CAS admit. Maybe lower end GPA, but it depends on your the history of your high school. I’m not sure if the ACT score shows up as your combined overall score or whether it’s broken down by section. Either way there’s nothing you can do about it now.

How is the Liberal Studies program viewed at NYU? Easier or harder to get in to than other areas of the school?

Does it matter if I transfer to 3 different schools during 3 high school life? Didn’t get kicked out or detention or something. Just did it for own personal reason. Thanks!

Sent from my GT-I9100 using CC

Would you say that Tisch doesn’t have as hard of GPA/SAT requirements as other schools in NYU? Also, I attended a 4-week summer intensive program for Tisch film, in which I had to dorm at NYU and i received 6 college credits upon completion. How good does that look on my application, and How much does it increase my chances of getting in ?

Hey Jack,

does NYU view heavily on freshman grades? And what kind of SAT score would I need to “cover up” a 3.5 UW/3.7 W GPA? And by cover up, I just mean, well I think you know.

Also is NYU completely need-blind? Meaning that selecting Financial Aid, does it have any effect on your decision?

Thanks for all the help

LSP is basically a 2 year foundation course, and you’re asked to maintain a 2.0 gpa to transfer to your originally intended school. It’s definitely easier than CAS, but in the grand scheme, it makes no difference as you’ll still get your CAS, Gallatin etc degree.

How’s pre-med at cas? And do u know the admit rate from NYU to med schools?

Insanemom

Found something you might find interesting,

“What I wish I knew Before I was a Pre-Med at NYU”

https://files.nyu.edu/svl213/public/page2.html</a></p>

And there is another thread with detailed information here on CC from 2009, which could provide you with some of the queries you may have regarding this program,

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/717704-my-1st-year-pre-med-nyu-detailed-information-prospective-pre-meds.html</a></p>

My D’s roommates, freshman as well as sophomore year, have been Pre-med students. It is quite demanding, according to her. And they invariably have the Labs scheduled at 7:30-8 am slot in the morning. The first 2 year courses are all required and weed out classes. And they are also huge. So only the really serious ones make it. Lots of them change their majors along the way, realising probably it is not their cup of tea.

Insanemom

In continuation of above there was an update from the same person who graduated in 2012, here on CC,

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1272610-thoughts-experiences-pre-med-nyu-freshly-graduated-bio-major.html</a></p>

@kemppp

LSP is easier to get in than other schools at NYU. Much easier classes than CAS.

@anthony7666

No. Doesn’t matter.

@Platinumxx2

Looks good. Shows you have a proven interest in Tisch and it was through NYU. Definitely is a plus on your application.

@DullPencil

I think freshman grades are less heavily weighted, but they still count. A 3.5 UW isn’t a bad GPA unless you took completely easy classes. If you want to be safe, a 2100-2200 should be good.

NYU is technically need blind, but practically who knows.

@Insanemom

Pre-med is competitive at NYU. It’s cutthroat and a lot of kids tend to drop out of the pre-med program after a semester or two. I don’t know the acceptance rate into med schools.

In my opinion, pre-med is one of the toughest tracks at NYU. Demanding class schedule and extremely tough material. You have to be incredibly bright and tenacious to follow through with pre-med.

To add on your last line^ When Poly becomes NYU school of engineering next year, this will make both engineering and premed the toughest tracks at NYU. Not sure about Stern programs…

Hey Jack, I’m kind of in a conundrum right now (lol, conundrum). I really want to go to NYU and I’m really inclined to get a business related major, but I’m afraid I won’t get into Stern so I’ve considered applying to CAS instead because I hear it is easier (how much easier is CAS admissions compared to Stern?)

Continuing on that point, what business related majors are there at CAS? And do you think it is a smart idea to do business stuff at CAS?

Thanks a ton

Jackhammer, I hear that a big part of the NYU social scene takes place at bars and, being a minor, I’d need a fake ID to get into a bar, and thus NYU social life. Can one acquire a fake ID at NYU?

And is it even necessary

I’d assume that getting a fake ID in NYC would be as easy as get one anywhere else - if not easier. It’s really not that hard. And as he pointed out in one of the earlier pages in this topic, NYC has SO much stuff to do that you don’t have to get drunk to have fun, so no it’s not necessary. Obviously depends what groups you hang with though. I’m definitely not planning on getting hammered every weekend, but it still might be some good fun.
