The only real main business related major in CAS is Economics. In my experience, I have seen some CAS Econ majors go down the Wall Street track or consulting. I’ll just put it bluntly though: CAS is not at the same level for business as Stern is. No question about it. It’s definitely possible to get into a business field. It’s just not in the quantity that Stern sends people down that track. A lot of it might have to do with the fact that a lot of CAS Econ majors and other CAS majors aren’t as inclined to go into a typical finance or econ based role. A lot of them look for government or non-profit positions. There are some clubs you can join.

However, if you want to go to Stern be forewarned that there is no turning away from that track. The programs there are designed to set you up directly for a career on Wall Street. Maybe there’s some wiggle room, but you have to be sure you want to do something in business/finance/management.

Getting a fake isn’t as easy nowadays, but it’s definitely possible. You just have to know the right people. If you see yourself as a person who hits the bars and clubs and/or likes the frat scene, then yes you will need a fake.

Is it possible to transfer to stern from CAS after freshman year?

Do you have to take Writing The Essay freshman year? Can you take it spring semester?

You stats are ok. Your portfolio is highly weighted.

Yes.

Yes and yes.

i am not sure if this question has been asked but:
have you heard of the 3-2 dual degree program with CAS and poly?
do you happen to know anyone in the program?
and how useful a dual bachelors degree would be?

I have no idea what this is.

so nyu increases tuition by some thousands every year, but do they increase financial aid bit by bit as well? right now nyu is barely meeting my need, but if tuition goes up 3k like it did last year, and my aid doesnt change, i’ll have to be paying out of pocket

Not necessarily. It’s their prerogative still. When you first get your financial aid quote, that’s what the minimum is supposed to be for all four years.

You could petition, but NYU could respond and just say “Eat me homie.”

Hello jackhammer25! Such a pleasure to find someone like you on the forum, because you seem like the perfect person to answer my concerns about NYU.

I am a Canadian student (currently a junior) that wishes to apply to NYU Stern. I’ve heard many comments saying that Stern is one of the hardest campuses among the other ones within NYU.

I am extremely curious and would like to know the stats and grades range? My GPA for my freshman and sophomore years weren’t great at all, I have raised my GPA around 90s now, and aiming to get it even higher in my senior year, because I want to show an upward trend at least, to fill out the gap for not doing well in my first two years.

I have a 2100 SAT score, great ECs and awards/recognitions. Just really scared that not doing well in my first two years of high school would hurt my overall application.

Mind giving some of your opinions? I’d highly appreciate them! Been feeling so dreadful over my freshman and sophomore grades. :(

Thank you so much jackhammer25! Please reply!

how long would it take to walk across the entire campus? is it a bad idea to have a class that starts 15 minutes after one ends?

@stillastudent: The recommended GPA is around 3.7 (a 93 average) with SATs at 2100 or higher.

@sundays24: No, it’s very easy to get to class on time, you might just have to take the stairs in the CAS building rather than wait for the elevator. Most classes happen within 2 blocks of one another. The exceptions being that some classes are in the SCPS building up on 12th(?) between 5th and 6th; or down by the gym. Even those you can easily get to in 15 minutes, it’s only a few blocks.

Hi,

I’m studying chemistry in CAS next year. I have few questions:

how hard is it to get good grade/gpa in freshman year?

how small are dorm rooms, and are most freshman in doubles? shower system?

fun traditions? any clubs/activities you recommend?

Thanks! I really appreciate it :)

Hi,

I just finished my freshman year at SUNY Buffalo, but I plan to transfer to Steinhardt in my sophomore spring semester, since it is too late for me to apply for the fall semester. I plan to pursue nutrition, but at UB i am a business major (because I was unsure of what to do so I decided to be practical, but I have come to learn that I just don’t really like business). I had planned to try to transfer to Stern (because I am a business major), but now that I have come to turns with myself that it just isn’t my thing I plan to try for Steinhardt. But the thing is that I didn’t really take any liberal arts classes and i believe that is part of the core at Steinhardt. I didn’t take any english classes either because I tested out of it, so I’m worried if I do get in I will be behind and have to take freshman classes and i won’t be able to graduate on time (and since it is so expensive i don’t want that to happen). Also i don’t think if i got in i would really get any financial aid, would i be given scholarships if i did well my freshman year? I have like a 3.7-3.8 gpa for first year (this is an estimate since not all my grades came out yet) and I am in the Honors college. How much cheaper would it be if i didn’t live on campus (since if i do transfer, i don’t plan to) and i wouldn’t partake in the meal plan as well. Also would it be difficult to make friends since i don’t plan to live on campus nor am i a freshman and it seems people will have already made their own friend groups by then (im not a super social person so this worries me). The thing that i’m most worried about is college rec letters, since i really haven’t gotten to know any of my professors. Is transferring like applying as a freshman? Also has anyone heard anything about the nutrition program? Thanks so much.

IF I get into stern, are there any chances to study under Aswath Damodaran?

Im a transfer student accepted to Tisch Drama and wanted to know about the upper classman housing. Which residence halls are the best? best value?

thanks :)

According to College Board–and confirmed by NYU about 2 years ago–a 3.7 gpa is equivalent to a 90-92 gpa or an A-.

@stillastudent

Stern is competitive as you already know. It’s a stats based school that takes GPA and standardized tests into account heavily. An A- average is not bad at all, but to be honest I can’t really give a good analysis since I don’t know your school (rank, history with Stern, school placements, etc…

All you can do is try to kill it in the beginning of senior year and increase your SAT scores. Aside from that, there’s the essays so you can still affect the outcome.

@sundays24

If one class is in Stern and the other one is in Mercer then obviously it’s a bad idea. But typically it isn’t an issue. I had 15 min between classes one semester. Granted, it was in the same building, but it was definitely manageable. Just make sure they aren’t far away from each other.

It all depends on you and your study habits

There’s a link on the housing website that does a much better job of explaining each and every dorm than I would. Ask me a specific dorm and I can give you a better answer.

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of NYU extracurriculars. Just me personally. To me the better things are the city activities like parades, Halloween, etc…

Lafayette is where a lot of the upperclassmen get placed due to being lower on the selection priority. I think Gramercy and Palladium are great upperclassmen housing options if you can get them. There really is no best value unless you get a room with an awesome view.

Will being a recruited athlete help for admissions at NYU stern?

Yes. A bunch of NYU athletes are in Stern.
