This is so convenient! I literally just made an account to post about my curiosity in the school. Just a warning, this post is kind of wordy, so if you would like to skip straight to the point of this message just go right to the last sentence.
I’m a current senior in high school, and frankly I’m not even going to put my information because NYU is a pretty big reach for me.
However, just as it is a reach nonetheless its been a dream school of mine almost my entire life. Realizing it was quite the reach for me I was actually not planning on applying until I saw the Gallatin School, then I couldnt pass up the opportunity.
So now the important stuff:
As I said, I’m a current senior, and my academic interest are a very wide range. I find my two main interests in science, and cinematography, (Yes I know, very different subjects) so I’m a bit split with which paths I want to take, but I am very interested in the medical field. Because of this interest, I’m applying to schools for science, intending on keeping my arts as a hobby throughout school, possibly joining clubs or taking a few classes. What I like about Gallatin is, to my understanding, that I would be able to take classes throughout the university at CAS, Tisch, and possibly even the nursing school?
So basically my question is, does it make sense for someone in my case, interested in the medical field, while also keeping a broad and open mind to other opportunities, to apply to Gallatin?

I’ve been searching for a Gallatin post! I’m really into the idea of going to Gallatin. I’ve always been into a lot of different things, and I’ve never really known what exactly I’m going to study or be in life. So Gallatin seems awesome! If you don’t mind, here are a few of my questions:
-What was your GPA in high school? Does Gallatin focus on that? Or do they care more about essay/supplement?
-What’s your concentration? Did you know going into freshman year what it would be?
-Is it really awesome? haha thanks for this! :)

First of all, in terms of NYU being a reach for you, I would say don’t let that get in the way because you never know what they are looking for, because you might be the perfect fit. In addition, you can designate that if you don’t get into Gallatin that you want to be in the Liberal Studies Program and if admissions decides they feel you should start off in LSP and not Gallatin you will have two years at LSP and two years at Gallatin.

To answer your primary question, I would say it makes sense if you can figure out a way to combine your interests. Gallatin is really about taking a wide array of interests and intertwining them into a homogeneous concentration. So if you are able to combine science and cinematography then I would go for it. I actually know a girl from Gallatin who concentrated in Science Journalism and Science Documentary Production. So it’s definitely possible.

And you are right, in Gallatin you are allowed to virtually take any class from any school.

Abby— My high school GPA was a 3.85-3.9 unweighted and a 4.2 weighted…I got a 1980 on the SAT

As far as I have heard, they care about everything but the essays are stressed…I may be totally wrong about this but from what I’ve heard, the writing components are highly valued.

You actually don’t have to declare a concentration until the end of Sophomore year and I know I want to be a writer but I am not exactly sure in what capacity so my concentration has yet to be defined.

And Gallatin is great—the classes are small, the teachers are bright and extremely nice/helpful, and your advisers are there to help you out every step of the way.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for your help!!
