NYU... Give much scholarship?

I'm a junior who goes to a public school in pennsylvania. I really want to go to nyu stern mainly because i think it would offer so many internship opportunities and also diversity. But i heard that nyu, because its a public school does not give out much scholarships. Is this true? or would the college make exceptions for people with much need for financial aid?

nyu is a private school

you're right.. but as a private school i still heard that the amount of scholarships they give out is pretty low.. is that true?

yupp its a private school,

and i've also heard that it's pretty stingy when it comes to financial aid

a NYU rep came to our school and she explicitly said that NYU cannot meet the financial needs of all students who apply for financial aid. it's very unfortunate :(

I don't think that's correct-- they agree to meet full financial need, but only the need that they assess you to need. Also, I heard a lot of financial aid is given in the form of loans (so you have to pay them back).

NYU has a large student body and smaller endowment than many of the "top universities" known for giving out great aid. A lack of financial aid, at least in comparison, should be expected.

Through rip-off SalleMae or Citi Loans!!!

Steinhardt is the only school at NYU that gives close to full rides/ larger scholarships. Still, a good amount is not impossible. I got $9000/yr. which is about 1/5 of tuition + housing. Doesn't seem like much, but for the price of the university, it does help. I know others who have gotten significantly more and significantly less. In all likelihood, do not expect anything above about 1/4 of your tuition in scholarships. While they may provide you 100% loans, that's still money you have to pay back.

I'm in Tisch, by the way, if that makes any difference (and yes my scholarship is partially based on the talent portion of my audition).

Don't expect to get much from NYU. I know a lot of people in really, really bad financial situations and they don't get more than 10 a year....expect to be paying loans off for the rest of your life!

NYU does not say it will meet full need. According to US News premium, 61% of the 2005 graduating class borrowed $ to attend and their average debt on graduation was about $29,500. About 10% get merit aid each year, averaging around $7,000.
