Wondering about on campus housing beyond freshman year. How easy/difficult is it to get campus housing for 4 years? Does access depend on which school you’re in? DD is applying to the hospitality program at SPS.
Also, is it true you cannot choose a roomate but will be matched by NYU based on 4 questions? How about dorm choice? What is the best strategy to avoid Weinstein which I hear is the worst dorm?
Housing is guaranteed for all four years IF you stay in NYU housing all the way (semesters abroad still count as being in NYU housing); if you move out and then want to go back in you get placed on a waitlist. My understanding is that it is normally pretty easy to get off this waitlist, but being on the waitlist does mean you end up way down on the list for choosing housing and you get what you get.
Things have been different this year due to Covid but in a normal year, yes freshmen do not get to choose roommates. This is because (as explained to us) NYU values diversity so (1) they do not want high school cliques etc perpetuating into college (2) they will pair you with someone coming from a different state/country (though compatible with the habits you list). After freshman year you are free to choose roommates for upperclassmen housing (or still get NYU to allocate if you want).
Not sure why you are so anti Weinstein but if your kid gets into a dorm he or she doesn’t like and is truly unhappy there they can apply for bed-for-bed exchange in a different dorm. (This is currently suspended during Covid, but they also this year allowed freshmen to choose roommates if they wanted.) It’s not clear if they will revert to normal for fall 2021, though I’d base my planning on them doing so. Every dorm has its acolytes and its haters. You rank in order of preference when you choose housing.
I’m not certain as my D was year abroad for freshman year but I think for freshman it is usually only those with disabilities who can get singles. You’d have to check the dorm pages to see if there any singles in freshman halls. I would strongly encourage your D to embrace the thinking behind how much NYU values diversity and if she ends up with a roommate she is truly unhappy with she can request a change. Singles are available in upperclassmen halls (Alumni is all singles and there are varying proportions of singles available in the others).
