maybe i overlooked it, but have you taken the act? or any sat IIs? despite the fact that your SAT score is a tad on the lower side (don’t freak out!) your ECs and overall letter grades are really promising. i think with a good essay and recs you have a really good shot. also, are you planning on applying ED, I know that NYU does in fact give an estimate of financial aid then, if that is your only reservation about ED. good luck! :)

(sorry about the late response) no, i haven’t taken the ACT or any SAT II’s (I plan on taking the SAT II’s in October and retaking the SAT in November and thats it).
and thanks! I hope the admissions department feels the same way
I plan on starting my essay in August when the common app is opened, and I’m pretty sure that I will have really good recommendations (hope I’m not jinxing it by saying that!).
The one thing about my SAT score that has me a little perplexed is that a friend of mine got into NYU this past year with a 1960 - only ten points higher than I did. I know she didn’t apply to Stern but I was wondering if the SAT score range is the same for all of NYU’s different colleges.

^It really depends on the NYU school – all are pretty selective, but CAS and Stern are more numbers based (3.7+ GPA and ~2100 SAT scores are in range), while Tisch, Steinhardt and Gallatin give more weight to soft factors and major-specific activities. Even with your straight A’s, I’d consider Stern a low reach. That SAT is relatively low.

There is ZERO chance of getting an aid package from NYU without significant loans. There are only a few colleges in the Country where aid students have no loans, HYPS for all and a few other top schools for the very low income.

Stafford loans are part of almost all aid packages, so look at the financial realities closely before deciding where to apply. And please, don’t let NYU be your dream, it becomes the financial nightmare of many.

Thank you. I’ve really started to think more about whether or not I want to even apply now, seeing the whole financial aid deal :/

What about UMich? Its out of state for me, however, I see a lot of things that I like about the University. What do you think my chances are to get in there?

What is your EFC? If you need much money, Michigan is also a bad choice. The only public colleges that meet need for out of state students are UVA and UNC-CH.

Not much at all, probably no more than 10-15k. ![]()
…I guess its Chapel Hill for me.

There may well be other schools to consider but they probably won’t be OOS publics or schools with bad merit and need based aid. You need to run the calculators, figure out what schools will expect you to pay, establish whether you need merit or need based aid and then construct a list.

Yeah, you’ll get into NYU no problem. Like everyone else said, it’s very expensive and not generous with financial aid. However, I’m positive that you will get into many great schools, some better than NYU, that will help you a lot more with financial matters. Good luck.
