Sophomore who wants to go to NYU? (:

Hey guys! Well, I am an incoming sophomore (10th grade) and ever since I was a child, NYU has been my "dream school". I can't think of anywhere else I would go and I really would like to know what I should be doing for the 3 years of high school that I have left.

What I already know is that I WILL apply early decision to the school...I just know I will and here are my grades and what not.
-Honor Student
-3.85 UW GPA ( 94. something overall UW average out of 100---hoping to boost it up ALOT)
-3.97 W GPA (98 overall average out of 100)
-Taking all honors "scholars" classes next year
-Taking AP world next year
-Taking 2-3 college classes at the nearby college over the course of next year
-Might apply for NYU precollege
-I'm in over 10+ clubs and have leadership roles
-I have over 100 hours of community service (hospital, library, tutoring etc) and I volunteer ALOT so I will have way more by junior/senior year
-I am a pretty good writer..so my admission essay(s) would be pretty well done and from the heart, I guess?
-Hoping my recs would be okay
-Took the PSAT as a freshman just to see how I would do and I did OK...not the best
-Still have to take the SAT...which leads me to my next question...

What can I do to prepare for the SATs? I mean, I know that was only freshman year and the easiest and I know it's just gonna get harder but I know that if I try, I'll do pretty well. It's never to early to plan ahead btw.

okay...so my questions are:
-Am I on the right track?
-How can/should I begin studying for the SATs?

oh and I have like a list of 20 schools that I know I'm gonna apply to when I'm a senior haha so if I don't get into NYU (please...don't jinx it!) It won't be TOO much of a disappointment. I planned all this out when I was in the 8th grade and I've been stressing over it since. (Georgetown, BU, Cornell, Columbia, ETC)

I'm pretty worried haha

Thanks so much though! (:

You can afford NYU? God damn!

The library is out of this world drop dead GORGEOUS.

haha nooo I can’t actually. Financial aid is a must and is it really? I wanted to take a campus tour this summer so I was hoping they’d show me the library…that’s great though! I love books (:

oh and do you go to CSI hs in new york by any chance??? (your username)

NYU does not meet need (neither will BU). DON’T apply to NYU ED. You will get little to no financial aid and be forced to back out. Think about it - if they have you locked in, they have no incentive to give you money to entice you to come. Apply RD and see if they give you scholarships.

There are tons of schools in NYC if that’s what you want.

Your grades are fine, your ECs are scattered. Pare the clubs down - 3-4 is fine, 10 is way excessive (I wouldn’t even put those all on if you do stay in them). Same with the volunteer work - focus on one place, not having a bunch of hours scattered everywhere. Pick your favorite place, which hopefully relates to your future major, and volunteer a lot there, perhaps even taking on a leadership role.

You should have posted this in the what are my chances form. You seem to be on the right track. I also suggest looking into the ACT, I have found that it looks like I will do much better on it then the SAT (based on prep work), various people do better on various tests. Make sure to take lots of AP’s when you are a junior/senior.

I do go to CSI :stuck_out_tongue: But yea, you won’t be getting any aid. I was going to apply (was once my dream school) but now I’m not even going to bother.

*Where do you go to school? Just noticed your location xD

NYU isn’t that hard to get into, LOL

I’m a Junior but I do :)

And I’m so happy I live in NYC

I don’t think a dream school has to be HYPS, Rhythm.

no, but with your grades you should be assured that you’d get in . lol

Do not apply ED to NYU. Financial aid is often a problem there and under no circumstances should you commit early.

The ‘dream school’ is an unhelpful myth. You want to know what a university is? It’s a plot of land with some buildings, staff, faculty, and students (grad and undergrad) mixed in. Every school is different, to be sure, but there isn’t magical pixie dust in the air that would make any specific school vastly better for you than others.

Right now, enjoy high school. Study hard and get involved. During junior year you can come back to CC and build a full college list, including NYU as one option if that’s still what you want.

@CSIHSIS Wagner FTW lol :smiley:

@alwaysleah yeah…I’m involved in sooo much stuff and my major (as of now) is pre-med so im just gonna stick to volunteering at the hospital
because it’s just what I love the most and I’m planning on sticking to like 5 clubs throughout highschool so I guess I’m set.

but yeah…thanks to all of you guys for giving advice and yeah I know I shouldn’t be stressing over all of this right now but idk? I’m always stressing over stuff lol (:

Staten Island! LET’S BE FRIENDS. BEST FRIENDS.

This isn’t really helpful… But for future notice “ALOT” is actually “A Lot”

lulz premed isn’t a major.

You can revisit college in about two years. NYU isn’t very difficult to get into, but it’s rare that it’s affordable. Drop the “dream school” idea and live your life.

@CSIHSIS YAAY! A NEW FRIEND! haha (:

@alwaysleah lol yeah I know pre- med isn’t a major idk why I said that? haha but I guess you’re right. I deffinetly want to start studying for the SATs though.

This is certainly exciting! I am also an incoming sophomore that plans on applying Early Decision to New York University as well, for their Nursing.

-This coming school year, I am going to take all honors classes available (Algebra II, US History 1, Applied Physics, and English 10.) I also plan on taking all of the honors and AP classes available for the rest of my high school years. Sadly, I had no honors classes this past year when I was a freshman, so I’m not sure if this will have a negative effect on my chances. :(

-My school doesn’t do GPA, but my average for the past school year was a 94. (It would have been much higher if I didn’t have to take that art course.)

-I am currently involved in Debate Team, Book Club (I will be an officer this year), and Circle of Friends (A program that helps children with special needs). I plan on continuing these extra curricular activities and joining Key Club, and the National Honors Society in my junior and senior year. This summer, I am going to join 4-H Senior Council, which is a club that does volunteer work.

-I plan on taking the SAT Subject Tests in Biology M and Chemistry. I will take the PSAT in the fall of my junior year because of possible merit qualifications and scholarships. I will take the SAT in the spring of my junior year.

-I will also be dependent on financial aid as well, since my parents are divorced, my father is unemployed (for now), and my mother makes no more than $20,000 per year. It is said that New York University has financial aid packages that aren’t sufficient, but I am prepared for disappointments and have a number of back-up colleges. Contrary to what many others are posting, you can actually decline an admission offer, even if it’s Early Decision, if you feel your financial aid package isn’t enough to suffice. But everything is worth a try! :D

-To answer your question about the SAT preparation, what I am doing is starting out with just vocabulary, and then I will learn the concepts on the test at a later date. I recommend you purchase The Princeton Review’s boxed set of vocabulary words. For your second question, I definitely feel like you’re on the right track. You’re doing much better than I am. :)

Since we have the same goals and concerns, we should keep in contact. :D

I’m glad sullivana pointed this out:
You CAN decline an admissions offer EVEN IF IT’S ED if you feel the financial aid package isn’t enough. It’s on their website somewhere & they reiterated it A LOT at the campus tour session. Speaking of which, the library is beautifullll, as is the rest of the “campus”, but if you live in NYC, I’m sure you already know that.
I’m in incoming senior applying ED1 to NYU SCPS (Hospitality Management, wooo!)

Good luck to you all in the future, but for now don’t stress too much about college- just enjoy high school.

@sullivana097 wow…we do have a lot of the same goals! Cool.
I took all advanced honors classes (“Scholars” classes) freshman year except for marching band, regular band and French 1&2 (they dont offer scholars French, Spanish, Latin or Italian to any freshman until sophomore year so I have the honors French 3&4 next year) and band is just band lol but anyway…I’m taking
-scholars trig/alegebra II next year
-scholars chemistry
-AP world
-scholars french 3&4
-scholars English 3&4
-marching band
-regular band
-Maybe scholars Latin 1&2???
and I’m planning on taking like 2-3 college now classes at a nearby cuny school this year so I get a bunch of credit from that too

-yeah so my course load is just average haha but I don’t think it’d matter much for college admissions if you didn’t have honors classes freshman year as long as you did good.

-my clubs and stuff are way too many so I’m planning on dropping a couple and sticking to 4 or 5 that I actually think I can balance/really like and hold leadership roles in. I’m planning on joining the NHS next year and holding a leadership role (hopefully!)

-As for the SAT subject tests, I have NO idea which ones I’m gonna take let alone which ones they offer so I’m not even sure. But for the SATs, I’m doing the same exact thing! I’m going to get the barrons vocabulary cards next week.

-I’m deffinetly going to need financial aid too and I know NYU doesn’t offer a lot based upon what people have told me and I know that if I apply ED I don’t HAVE to go…but we’ll see.

-I think we really should keep in contact. We have a lot in common too with school and stuff, so that’s great! (:

@tniemann yeah, I visited their “campus” too (lol) and I have to admit…the library IS gorgeous! I guess I am stressing over this stuff too much and enjoying high school would be a better idea haha thanks!
Good luck btw! (:
