NYU Poly General Studies Program

For NYU-Poly, I applied for Civil Engineering, but got admitted to the General Studies Program. From what I gathered by reading the enclosed letters, the program is for people who are strong but not as strong as other applicants. It's a small program too; less than 100 people are placed in it. So... this is a good thing, correct?

Does anyone have experience with this particular program? It seems good, except for the fact that getting a BA can be delayed.

Basically, it’s a program that tracks your progress carefully freshman year. You will have to take pre-college classes, either online or on campus the summer before you begin to prepare you for the year. In the fall, you start off with a lower courseload but get to make up the credits over the summer, free of charge. You can take a normal courseload if you perform very well in the pre-college classes. You won’t be behind in your BS requirements as long as you pass your classes. They have mandatory tutoring as well to make sure you stay on top of everything. After freshman year, you are considered a normal student as long as you fulfill the requirements.

OP: May I ask what are your stats? I got referred to the GS program as well. I’m just wondering why I was referred to GS program instead of HEOP and TRIO… I meet the income guidelines for HEOP though.

Is it because HEOP is for people who are “inadmissible” under regular standards but GS is for people who are “admissible” but would need personal support from the college?

@lilmelonred, did u apply RD? If so, when did u hear, since April 1 is notification day? And if u don’t mind, what r ur stats? To which school did u apply?

Yes I did apply RD. I got the notification like 3 days ago by mail. My stats aren’t that great but yeah they are borderline decent? I applied to the engineering school (Poly) for NYU if that’s what you’re asking. I applied to many other NY schools that offer engineering.

@lilmelonred

I had decent ECs, couple of strong recommendations, and uniquely written essays. My cumulative G.P.A. was 93, and my SAT was 1810 (CR:560 M:590 W:660). I guess my score was a bit below the cutoff of the other applicants (Math specifically). NYU-Poly admissions have been getting harder every year, so I’ve been told.

Yeah the fact that it will only be NYU school of engineering next year, I can imagine it gets just as selective as other NYU schools. MY math score is higher than yours. My CR is lower than yours and my writing is lower too. My GPA is 3.7. I think the GS program will definitely benefit us. :)

If money was no issue would you choose Manhattan College and NYU-Poly what would you chose and why? I am struggling making the decision. I am going to visit them in April but man if it isnt tough to decide.

Well I didn’t visit Manhattan College but it is very close to where I live. So is NYU poly. I would definitely choose NYU poly over Manhattan. NYU’s engineering is really strong and they prepare you really well for the workforce. I visited poly many times already and I kinda like it.

Lilmelonred: was that your weighted or unweighted GPA?

My school only did weighted GPA.
