NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering information

@PolyEngineer So should I accept the offer of admissions then contact my advisor? Or do I get an advisor after fall term begins?

NYU Poly’s ranking on PayScale seems to have dramatically decreased. It moved from 4th to 31st in salary potential. Not a big deal but it seems weird.

Hey, I was wondering how much free time you generally have outside of classes? Being able to have a lot of free time to explore myself and the city around me is a really important factor in my college decision, and I was wondering how much free time I’d be able to have at Poly.

Hey, I’d like a suggestion. As a freshman should I select a Brooklyn based residence hall or a Manhattan one?

Are you allowed to dorm in Manhattan? You want to spend 30 minutes each way or more riding the subway commuting to school everyday? The fares add up to quite a bit of money. Live in the Brooklyn dorms and walk to classes.

Actually, NYU started a free bus service between the two campuses last year.

@PolyEngineer‌

I wanted to thank you for letting me know about the Businnes and technology management major. I researched a lot about it and I fell in love with it! Lol.

I was wondering about how electives and stuff work. For example, I want to learn new languages and continue my current language which is French. Idk how to exactly put this but is there room in a general schedule to fit electives? or is it all mostly filled up by the required courses for the specific major? Do you know if there ade like foreign languages classes at the Poly campus or are they at the main campus?

Also, I play the violin and I wanted to continue with an ensemble or an orchestra. But I don’t want to major or minor in music or go to Tisch. Do you know if there are any classes or ways I could continue with that?

I really appreciate the time that you put into answering our questions :slight_smile:

Thank you again!

For those who already filled out the housing application, Othmer or Clark? Othmer here :slight_smile:

I signed up for Othmer too! :slight_smile:

I guess this is what it’ll be like https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MnizDSfPEiI

@PolyEngineer I don’t know if I should start a new thread for this or if you ( or anyone else) can help. My friend’s daughter, who does not use CC is seriously considering NYU engineering for the upcoming fall. My friend is worried about the safety of the housing situation on this campus since it is approximately 70% male. Do you ( or anyone else) know the experience for girls? Please let me know any insight you may have or if you think a new thread would be appropriate. Thanks!

@612skies
Accept the admission offer. You will meet your advisers soon after classes begin. Don’t worry too much. Just schedule your classes following the CS curriculum.

@SameerHussain
The ranking actually depends on a number of factors. So if you tweak the on-campus housing option and financial aid option, Poly is still around 5 or 6.

@Ausername91

It honestly depends on a number of factors. I commute and it takes me a hour, so that’s two hours out of my day. Also, it depends heavily on your major. Most of the engineering majors are the most time consuming, while majors like BTM are not as intense. And finally, it depends on the time management you have. If you plan everything accoridngly, you will have plenty of free time. I personally have adequate free time, so yeah.

@Dead7letters
Well, it honestly depends. If you don’t mind commuting and are willing to give up some sleep, then I suggest you go for Manhattan. Otherwise, go for Brooklyn. You can always switch after your first year anyways, so experiment! Keep in mind that some dormitories are much more expensive, so please do your research beforehand!

As mentioned by @SameerHussain , there is a bus service. They actually started it last year. It brings you to Washington Square and back. However, it’s only at certain times of the day (the schedule updates regularly and is posted all over Poly), so you will have to plan accordingly.

You can also use the subway and/or bus. The length of stops from Poly to Washington Square is 5 or 6 stops depending on where you get off. That takes like 10-15 minutes. Lots of options!

@Ali121

No problem, it’s my pleasure! Yes, I believe that the BTM major has many free electives!

Here is the typical schedule:
http://engineering.nyu.edu/academics/programs/business-and-technology-management-bs/curriculum

I believe that languages would fall under humanities, but you should know for sure when you have your adviser meetings during your first semester. Since BTM does have a lot of required courses, you take a lot of other fields’ classes to make up for it!

I don’t think there are any language classes at Poly, but I never checked since I’m not interested. The only languages I know at Poly are computer languages, haha! I know for a fact that the main campus has a plethora of languages.

As for the music situation, you would probably have to go to the main campus. You don’t necessarily have to minor there. You can just take a class. However, I don’t know much about this. You should speak to the Tisch administrators!

That is a very funny video! Yes, it is like that. I heard all kinds of wacky stories going on at the dorms, haha!

@oliver17

Hello there!

I think I answered your question before, or somebody else that asked the same thing. As far as I know, it is quite safe here. The ratio is actually changing a lot now. There are more girls than ever, and due to the push for woman engineers, I would imagine that a lot more are coming. I have yet to hear about any incidents here at Poly. We’re quite a friendly community. You might be looking at older data that hasn’t been updated. Safety is not an issue here! All my female friends here have never complained about any sexual harassment or violence. Furthermore, there are security guards across the campus, and there is a fire department down the block.

Hope that answered your question!

@PolyEngineer

Thank you again! Your responses are super helpful!

I was just a bit confused on something you said. Did you mean to say that BTM does or doesn’t have a lot of required courses?

So right now I’m enrolled as mechanical engineering major. I checked and the courses were quite different compared to BTM for the first semester. Do you know if there is a way to change my major before the fall semester begins? Or does it not matter?

Also, I saw that there’s a math placement test required for all freshman. Let’s say I get a 4 on the AP Calc AB and that should count for my calculus I credit at Poly. Do you know if I still need to take that placement test even with those credits?

You might have already mentioned it, but I was just curious to know what major and minor you’re studying.

Thanks :slight_smile:

@Ali121

It does NOT require a lot of classes.

You can try emailing your adviser. However, as I mentioned previously, you can build your schedule around the BTM curriculum and then change your major when you have your first adviser meeting.

No you don’t need to take the placement is you score higher than 4 on calc AB exam.

I am currently a Computer Engineering major with a minor in game engineering. However, once the major is approved (isn’t an official major currently and will be voted on by faculty members later in May), I will be switching to the Computer Engineering/Computer Science dual degree.

Even if i have SAT scores, and read in English based school in Non-Native English Speaking Country, am i supposed to take TOEFL or something like that as English Proficiency test, if i wanna join NYU Poly school for Undergraduation?

@Sarthakjoshi

I am not too sure. I would recommend calling NYU on the phone and asking them. They will give you an answer. I don’t know much about international students. Please, if you find out, post on there as other students may find your answer useful.
