I just want to let you know that a new major has been approved. It is the CS/CompE dual major!!! I know some of you are interested in both CS and CompE so this is a great opportunity. The curriculum has not be created yet, so I don’t believe that you can transfer right away, but it should be available by the time you come to Poly!
Hi guys! I just want to introduce myself here. I’m also a current student at Poly. Pretty funny that @PolyEngineer reminded me of the existence of College Confidential, as I haven’t logged on here in two years (and successfully forgot my password!). Anyways, I’m happy to answer any questions about life on campus, dorming, taking classes at main campus, what to do around the area, etc.
But first, a couple resources (if they haven’t been posted yet):
The Poly 2019 Facebook group for you freshmen: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NYUPOLY19/ (requires an NYU email. You get it activated on start.nyu.edu after you accept the admission offer.) [edit: apparently CC doesn’t like facebook links. just add the /groups/NYUPOLY19 part at the end of the FB domain and you’ll be there.]
FAQ on my Wiki site: http://sergey.smirnov.wiki/school/nyu/freshmanguide (originally written by Wells ('16), updated by me.)
Anyways. Pretty cool to see there’s lots of active interest in Poly. Hope to see at least some of you this fall!
@Ali121 re: violin. There are music programs at Steinhardt. I’m a symphonic percussionist and I’m currently in the NYU Community Orchestra. You can take a look at the program offered here: http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/auditions/community_orchestra
Roger is a fantastic conductor and great person. Hope you get in!
@oliver17 The dorming situation is generally safe. There have not been any serious incidents in the last school year in Othmer. I’m currently living here for the second year, and I can definitely say that things have drastically improved since my very first week living. In fact, the neighborhood alone has become even safer in the last couple years as there has been more police and NYU Public Safety presence at Poly. MetroTech is essentially a business park with government, financial and engineering companies (and school!) in the same area, so there’s really nothing to worry about.
And regarding the gender ratio, it’s been evening out. My freshman year, I’d say it was more 75/25 m/f, this year is closer to 65/35. There are significantly more students on campus too ever since we had the merger, and it could feel a bit crowded. But honestly, don’t worry about it. The students at Poly and NYU are generally respectable human beings.
@Dead7letters As a freshman, you’re confined to dorming at either Othmer or Clark if you go to Poly. After that, you have very limited selection for Othmer and a variety up at the main campus. Honestly, Othmer’s cheaper and nicer than a few of the freshman dorms I’ve been to up at main campus (especially Weinstein!). Plus, if you’ll be living in Manhattan, you’ll have to worry about the commute to MetroTech each morning, which can be a pain if you’re not used to waking up much earlier and dealing with overcrowded, stuffy trains.
@Ali121 re: othmer video
Oh goodness, not gonna lie that’s some pretty terrible video editing, especially with the “what is Brooklyn” part. But yeah, in the “U guessed it” part they show Othmer’s basement, elevators, and a part of Dibner and a lounge. After living here for two years, this clip’s not an accurate representation of dorming at Poly at all. I’ll also assume this video isn’t a parody of what it’s like here, since it’s uploaded to the “official” NYU Brooklyn Hall Council page.
@Ali121 I don’t really know for violins, since I’m a percussionist and we’re always in few quantities. But I’d say it’s decently competitive, so have a pretty good repertoire to show. I think Roger’s a violinist himself, though I’m not 100% sure on that.
A transcript shows all the grade information for a student since the beginning of their high school career. Report cards, on the other hand, only show the progress of the student for the current academic year. Colleges want stamped and signed official transcripts. They will never accept report cards.
Oh come on! I am an Indian student. And nobody has ever taken SAT, except me, in my school. So, I don’t think my school can ever know about common app until I made myself go through this.
One more thing I wanna ask; i know i ask a lot so, I hope you won’t mind. Can you tell me format of this transcript? 'Coz i’ve got to tell my hs officials about this, so that they could draft it.
Here is a link to a generic transcript. It should look similar to this. It should have all your grades, segregated into their respective subject, and all test scores that you see as important.
@IvyOrNothing a high school transcript is an official document that contains your grades from the entire time you were in high school. Poly needs your official one as it contains the school’s seal and it is verified to be authentic by school officials. The reason being is obvious, as anyone can go and make up a word doc with their grades and send it over. It costs money to do this and it’s not that much. It’s roughly $25 if I recall correctly. Contact your high school administrators and they’ll direct you to how to send it from your school.
I’m going to be in the BTM program with a concentration in finance…do you know if it’s possible to do a major in finance at Stern in conjunction with my BTM major? Like a double major or a dual degree program. If not can I at least do a minor in business at Stern? Do you know of anyone who has done something this-either double majored or minored at a different NYU school?
I probably should’ve just applied to Stern but this program seemed interesting as it combined finance, management and technology so I decided to go for this…how does BTM compare to a pure finance degree from Stern-in terms of opportunities, salary potential and prestige? If I wanted to pursue an MBA after undergrad would a Stern Finance degree be the best option? If so, can you transfer after a semester or two?
