NYU has been my top school for the past few years, but now it’s come time to decide which specific school I want to apply to. The OP in the post linked below had pretty much the exact same dilemma as me; MCC at Steinhardt or Business w/ Marketing at Stern?
Although my initial plan was to simply apply to Stern and minor in MCC, I’ve started to doubt my chances. Additionally, I’d probably have more fun and be more intellectually challenged in an MCC major, but there’s no doubt that I’d get a more well-rounded and widely applicable education at Stern. I’ll link my chance me thread from last year below (w/ updates at the bottom. Added another internship since then, but that’s about it).
Essentially, I’m worried that specific factors like my relatively not as good math grades (especially Stats, which I ironically did really well on my final paper for) will be red flags that would take me out of the running at Stern but wouldn’t necessarily matter as much at Steinhardt. I’ve checked the box on the application to consider me for the Liberal Arts program if I don’t get into my primary choice, but it’s still concerning. Thanks for your insight!
Research the EXACT courses you would have to take to complete each degree. Look at the course descriptions. It will become clear to you when you see what you will have to study. By the way, it seems like you are allowing the tail to wag the dog–you decided on which university you want to go and then pick which school within the university? You’d be better off knowing, in general, what you want to study and selecting schools that have that program.
If you want my opinion, if you want to go into an advertising career, you should major in a liberal arts discipline and use your summers to intern in advertising. Major in history, philosophy, classics, English, etc. Be an educated person with a broad outlook. The best advertisers are intellectually curious about a lot of things.
Yeah, that’s smart. I did my research and realized that I could honestly find myself at either school for different reasons. I decided on NYU in general because it was the one that aligned most with what I wanted to study and how I wanted to study it. There were programs at other schools that had pieces of what I wanted and would ultimately work out just fine, but not on the same level that NYU does.
And the thing is, I’m not totally sure I do want to commit to advertising (even though I know that’s what I put in the header). It’s been fun working in related fields so far, but I don’t want to confine myself. So maybe I should focus in liberal arts. Thank you for your comments
Maybe it’s because I hate taking liberal arts, courses but I would personally chose Stern to Steinhardt. But I’m pretty sure you can apply to 2-3 schools? (At least I could when I submitted my app last year)
You can apply to 2-3 campuses. Unfortunately, you can only choose one school inside the main campus (and one major at each of the other campuses, if you decide to apply to those as well). At this point, I’m starting to consider Gallatin since it may in reality be a better option for me.
Interesting. I’m only seeing the ability to apply to one. Maybe it’s because I have Stern selected right now? Though I had to same outcome when I was in Steinhardt.
Oh, I guess I didn’t consider that as a real second choice since it forces you into just CAS as your second option. It’s not a real drop-down, just a backup. But I guess you’re right!
No, that is your second choice school option if you tick the box to have it as an alternative. And it doesn’t “just” force you into CAS, you can transfer into any other school, though your options at Tandon, Stern, Steinhardt and Tisch are more limited coming out of LS core than entering them as freshmen.
In general: You shouldn’t put something as backup if you haven’t researched it and are not happy about it being an option, whether it’s another school like liberal studies or another campus like NYUSH (which both seem to have been popular second choice options last year followed by posters being offered places at them and posting “but I don’t really know what this entails”…)
