Which School Is the Best Fit: Gallatin vs. Steinhardt Edition!

Okay, so I am a rising senior who is looking to apply to NYU ED in the fall. However, I have a slight problem, to which school should I apply, Gallatin or Steinhardt? If I were to choose Steinhardt I would be interested in the Media, Culture, Communications program, however I don't believe it is EXACTLY what I am looking for. I want a degree that will pave the path for a career in the PR industry, namely music/fashion/other public image type things. As I have skimmed the NYU site, it seems that MCC is far more media driven, which isn't what I am particularly interested in (i.e. publishing/journalism/television.) SOOOOO, after all that background, I was wondering if it might be wiser to apply to Gallatin and sort of create my own degree, with a concentration in PR and other related fields. Any MCC majors or anyone with a PR focus at Gallatin's advice would be really appreciated! Thanks so much!

To be honest, you’ll end up taking a lot of your PR classes in Steinhardt anyway, so you might as well apply to MCC outright. There’s a good amount of PR classes in the department.

But MCC’s true shining characteristic is our internship program. Steinhardt is well connected in the NYC media/PR market. MCC students intern in marketing companies, CBS, NBC, and various public relations firms. MCC students intern a LOT, and you can get so much industry experience before even graduating. Industry experience can lead to a job after college. I would apply to Steinhardt outright and then specialize in both PR and marketing in Stern.

Thanks so much that was very helpful! Is there a way that you can minor in marketing in Stern? I was under the impression that your minors can only be through CAS if you are in a different school (Steinhardt, Gallatin, what have you).

There’s a minor called “Business, Entertainment, Technology”. It’s a dedicated cross-school minor and you can take classes in Tisch and Stern. You can also take marketing classes in Stern without actually declaring the minor, the marketing classes can go towards completion of your MCC degree.

awesome, thank you so much!

this is scary. This was my exact dilemma until I decided to go with MCC…

haha no way! well if you don’t mind my asking, are you happy with the decision? i have really been struggling with it lately, so any input would be greatly appreciated. :)

Does Steinhardt have a good program for people who want to go into publishing? I know that would probably be like media studies but just like moriah I’m not really into the whole journalism/media driven approach.

I guess I was facing the same dilemma (without knowing it lol) because I didn’t even think to look and see if the Steinhardt MCC program would fit my needs.
