NYU vs. Northwestern

Recently I was admitted to both NYU Tisch as a film major and Northwestern as a radio/television/film major. Now before you jump the gun and state the obvious let me just say that I plan on double majoring- with biomedical engineering. If I go to the better film program (Tisch) then I have to do biochemistry instead (at CAS). Honestly, I'm not a big fan of biochem. Northwestern has a very well known engineering school. I can't decide which to chose.

P.s. I'm freaking out, so all feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think you can double major from Comm to McCormick.

If you are going to base your decision on the potential double major at Northwestern, you had better check with NU to make absolutely sure that it would indeed be permitted -- and if it is, what sort of restrictions there might be and what kind of course load you would be carrying.

I do know that NU does have rules about double majoring in two different schools, although I don't know about pairing McCormick and COE specifically. I do know that the BME curriculum is pretty intense and does not have a whole lot of flexibility and elective slots, so you might not be able to fit in the courses you need for the film major in 4 years.

I urge you to call NU right away so that you do not base your decision on false assumptions.

Before I applied I contacted the school and apparently there is a freshmen doing the double major right now. I have to do summer courses to graduate on time though.
This is true for both schools.

I can't advise based on what you want to study, but have you given any thought to the differences in flavor on the campuses? NYU is very city, very hip, very trendy, very diverse. NU is very suburban, very Greek, very preppy. Different strokes for different folks.

I love New York City and I don't mind that the campus is split up at all. I'm really into underground music scenes and tend to dress pretty trendy. Btw did I mention my sister goes to NYU.
On the other hand, I love how Northwestern has a football team (kind of sucks how NYU does not). I like how Northwestern has a campus and is still close to a major city. I also feel like the students at Northwestern are more down to earth than the ones at NYU, which may be nice before entering a business with renowned egos. Or maybe I should get used to that...

Having spent considerable time on both campuses - I'd say that if you want a more traditional college experience, but w/ access to all that a great city has to offer - go w/ NU.

Otoh, if you would just rather go straight to the whole NYC scene - then NYU is the place to go.

go with NYU, northwestern's campus is so urban, you don't really get a traditional college experience

Thanks for your input guys!

You may want to do the 5-year BA/BS program at Northwestern. I really highly recommend it. Many students who double-major in two different schools belong in this program. If you are double-majoring in two different schools like Communications and Engineering, it is much better to do it in 5 years rather than 4 years. I know it won't be financially better, but you will be able to take all the courses you need in your majors without having any regrets or taking summer school classes when you can relax and do internships.

Not a tough choice really. NU is a far better school overall. NU BME is a clear choice. Film programs are a push. NU has a real campus and real college life. NYU has no campus to speak of and unless you have alot of money in NYC you will have very limited opportunity to enjoy what it was about NY that attracted you in the first place. I have lived both places.

I'm a film major here at NU. PM me if you want some insight into the program, particularly in contrast in Tisch. It's not as simple as "stating the obvious." My response would be too long to post here.

With that said, I HIGHLY doubt you could fulfill both majors within 4 years. Engineering curriculum is very strict and while the core reqs for RTVF are not intensive, I bet it'd be pretty hard to coordinate. If you are more set on BME as a career path, you could do that major and then do Film Studies minor within WCAS (however, you would not take production classes in that minor).
