NYU vs. University of Chicago

I need help deciding which college I should attend next year:

University of Chicago (Giving me $45000 out of $60000) and I'm in Biological Sciences for Pre-Med

vs.

New York University (I got a D.E.A.N.S. Scholarship so I'm going for free) and I'm in the Presidential Honors Program (free Study Abroad and etc.) going for Neural Science for Pre-Med

Help?

So you either HAVE $15k per year and WANT to go to UChicago, or you go to NYU. These are both excellent schools. Such a wonderful dilemma! :)

How do you know you got into presidential scholars program? i got a CAS scholarship, does this mean im in the program?

I’d personally go with UofChicago.

Do you really want to spend the next four years of your life spent in your dorm studying? Do you really want to spend the next four years of your life with other students who don’t have the slightest idea of what “social skills” are?
No?
Then go to NYU. Go for free, make sociable and outgoing friends, make important connections, and get great internships.

"How do you know you got into presidential scholars program? i got a CAS scholarship, does this mean im in the program? "

Nope. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the program. You might haven’t gotten a scholarship, NOT entrance into the Presidential Scholars Program.

How do you know then? do those who get in get a paper or notice allong with the accpetance, i thought i would be top 5% , 2200 SAT 96 gpa, idk, hopefully i get in! ill call later i guess.

UChicago is the place, by their own admission, “where fun goes to die.” There is massive grade deflation there and you’ll need to sacrifice your soul in order to get the grades you need for med school. If that kind of academic atmosphere appeals to you, go to UChicago. If you want a more laidback pre-med experience (although pre-med at NYU isn’t easy by any means, nor is pre-med easy anywhere) go to NYU.

Well I think it’s worthwhile pointing out that tons of people apply to pre-med programs everywhere, and many drop out. It’s not that it’ll be too hard, but lots of people simply realize medicine may not be their thing. I don’t know if this situation will arise for the OP, but it’s best to keep options open. Looking at the strength for individual departments, more of UChicago’s departments are ranked in the top tiers. Booth ain’t so bad either.

Even if you suffer from grade deflation at UChicago, you expect med school to be any easier? You might as well get the right preparation with balancing studying hard and fun at UChicago than at medical school.

Booth is only for graduate school. Econ is Chicago’s closest thing to a business related major. Incidentally, Econ at NYU is top ranked and provides many opportunities due to its proximity near major business hubs (although CAS econ kids often play second fiddle to Stern students.)

Anyway, I still believe NYU to be in the best interest of the OP. 1) He gets a full scholarship 2) He gets free travel among other perks and 3) NYU’s premed program is not shabby either. It’s not like he’ll be completely unchallenged by the premed program at NYU - he’ll still have to learn how to balance fun and study at NYU. To me, Chicago is overkill unless one is a good fit for the culture.

UChicago is a better school - better diploma. Chicago is a city school, but NYU is really a city school. The Chicago campus is much nicer, but still close to the action. I’m go to Chicago.

“UChicago is a better school - better diploma.”

For some, perhaps, for others NYU might be better. It usually depends on how well a school matches a student’s interests and needs.
