Nyu?

On NYU's website it says the average GPA for transfers is a B. But what would be a solid GPA to get accepted, considering that everything else is good (ec's, essay, etc.)?

Also, do you think I would have an advantage applying as a commuter rather than a resident?

According to an adcom from the message board, this is how NYU breaks down grades:

4.0 = 93 - 100% (A+/A)
3.7 = 90 - 92% (A-)
3.3 = 87 - 89% (B+)
3.0 = 83 - 86% (B)

The counselor said the average accepted students are between B+/A-, however, I believe NYU also places a bit of their decision on SAT scores as well. Hope this helps, good luck :)

I do not believe that there is an advantage to applying as a commuter student because I don't think they even care if they are not going to admit you. Once you are admitted, then your info is submitted to the Housing and Financial Aid Offices for reviews and decisions about that stuff. Those checkboxes on the application are just so they can know what to put in your "fat" envelope when they accept you.

I have posted alot of questions on the bulletin board the the adcom provides, and I have been told that, while standardized tests are looked at, they will not "make or break" you. Their decision is really based mostly on your performance in college and ability to handle college level work. Good test scores will not make up for bad grades, as they put it.

Also, they are pretty finnicky about what the average GPA for a transfer student is. The standard answer is that it is a "B" but that most successful students have more than a "B". I have also seen them post that it is an "A-", an "A" and a "A-/B+". To tell you the truth, I don't think that they want to reveal too much because they don't want people to think that their standards are low (but that's just my opinion).

I think a solid GPA would be at least a 3.3 or above. If most admits are a B+ to A-. then that range is good. I just think they don't want students who are right on the brink of a "C" average.

I completely agree. Some schools are just too concerned with their own reputation and won't reveal very many concrete statistics, leaving us applicants in the dark.

As another CC poster said about NYU, get above 3.6 for CAS, and above 3.8 for Stern.

Thanks for the info!!

MYU does not give out grades of A+ (4.0 scale)
