NYUs average sat score

Im just wondering whether the 1306 score listed on Princeton Review is accurate.... it conflicts greatly with the average that the school puts up itself on the fastfacts page. (not sure if that is for accepted students or matriculated students)

My little brother just applied, hes got a 1350, just seeing where he stands.

a 1350 is on the low end of admitted students. admissions get tougher every year though and SAT certainly aren't the only factor the admissions committee looks at.

A 1350 is not really on the low end; probably better than 35-40% of admits.

I just got in to NYU w/a scholarship w/a 1350. It depends on the school within NYU. A 1350 is knd of low for Stern, but should be well w/in the ranges of the other schools.

you give me hope...

I'm glad to hear that. Don't get caught up in the score-obsession of CC. There are other factors, which are probably what put me over the top. I think NYU likes to see ECs that relate to your major. So if you want to major in math, NYU would be looking for participation in things like Math team and AME because it shows you are good at and have a true passion for you major.

I'm hoping for CAS...with a 2010 i'm really doubting myself after reading all these posts...but i have to remind myself that the average SATs at CC are super high and don't reflect the real applicant pool...
thanks hep

Speaking of 2010, I know someone who got a scholarship to CAS w/a similar SAT score. He did a lot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, so that set him apart. It's a huge fundraiser at my school (largest MDA high school fundraiser in the nation) and he is one of the leaders of it. He did have a higher GPA than me though. I'm ranked #21 and he's ranked #7 out of ~270 students. Still, it shows that other factors can balance out the SAT. A 2010 is a very good score by the way.

Just so you know, here is NYU's average SAT and ACT scores according to the college board:

Critical Reading: 600 - 700
Math: 610 - 710
Writing: 600 - 700

ACT: 27 - 31

coffee.. i got the same SATs as you

1320/1600 2010/2400
i see them picking me as a gsp student rather than a RD CAS. this is what haunts me to see that i am not getting any mail yet, i live in nyc too=(

btw. what else did you apply for?

CAS: 1300-1400s
Stern: 1400s to 1500s
Gallatin: 1300-1400s
SCPS: 1250s-1350s
Tisch: 1100s-1300s (I know tisch and gallatin people who got into Columbia)

Oh and GSP: 1100-1200s

at my school the acceptance average for NYU is a 1310...so hopefully that's good news...
i'm terrified too; nyu is my top choice.
best of luck to you.

what do you mean by "what else did you apply for"? do you mean financial aid? if so, i didn't.

the average SAT has been SKY ROCKETING the last few years, so the published numbers, and school averages may not be accurate.
When I was applying 2 years ago the stern average 1412, now its 1443....CAS was 1350's-60's 2 years ago, it probably went up considerably also.

remember average means exactly that...and average...People seem shocked when they hear of people getting in below the average, when approximately half --assuming normal distribution--are below the average. Furthermore, Tisch has a higher SAT average than posters make it out to be...whereas there are a few people with 1000 sat scores who got in for being enormously talented, a vast majority are 1300-1500 range. Also comparing departments is much more important (actors versus film and tv)

My school keeps records of all the students who applied to different schools. Last year, the lowest SAT score from my school to get inot NYU was in the 1100s. Most of the others who were accepted had SAT scores in the 1200 - 1400 range. There was a 1410, top 5% of the class reject from Stern, which shows how hard it is to get in.

coffee i meant what other schools did you apply to? and where are you located?

we need to make a aim chatroom.

I'm in CT...small prep school...
I applied ED to barnard and got deferred...I don't know why I applied b/c i don't even like it that much. more of a panic decision because everyone at my school does ED so i felt that i had to...so i just picked barnard.
I got into Mcgill and Fordham...
I applied to BU, Syracuse, Wellesley, and Georgewashington as well...
But NYU is my top choice b/c they have a major in Romance Languages. Plus, i love the city.

If i don't make it to NYU i'll probaby go with Mcgill. I like that fact that the core curriculum in arts is very minimal. no science or math ever again!

and yourself?

NYU doesn't have a major in Romance Languages... although you can major in Italian, French, Spanish, etc...

Yes it does, it's under the french major...
believe me, i've checked...lol

ahh so im guessing, for CAS atleast, some sites report the average scores for accepted students which is notable higher then those for matriculated students. Makes sense , thanks.

My bad coffeetoffee646.... I just checked and you are right :) I am majoring in comparative literature, focusing on French/Russian... which two languages will you concentrate on if majoring in Romance Languages?

Hey, no problem! I know, it's hard to find...
I speak spanish (not native but i lived with a bunch of spaniards in italy this summer) and have taken it since first grade...so enough with that...
I learned italian this summer, so i'm thinking italian and french would be nice.
I love the romance language combo...it's like a two-for-one deal...
I also considered comparative literature; who knows, it could be an option.
Turkish and German are also appealing to me...I just love how NYU has so many languages.
