@willowandmoon…we are really confused here…D got an intent to enroll agreement and they took a deposit but she did not get an congrats. what happened with you? we don’t know what to think!!
@radioflyer yes she got the link with her intent to enroll. I’m not sure it said to fill it out ASAP but I did since it’s ED and she’s going for sure. We also just got the scholarship update with merit money. Did anyone else get that?
Still nothing here, not going to sleep much tonight. Anyone else not heard anything yet?
@walkbanx and @radioflyer I hope today is the day that you hear!
For parents of students who have been accepted it’s a good idea to make your hotel reservations for orientation now because it will fill up fast! Just a thought. We booked the Hotel at Oberlin last night because we’ve never been to campus before and it seems like it will be the most convenient with attending events for the few days that parents can stay and help with move in.
@LMC9902 thanks for your thoughts!
Didn’t sleep a wink last night, still refreshing!
In response to the LMC9902, the Hotel at Oberlin opened this past May, is owned by the college, and is a beautiful facility. I did not stay there, but ate there a couple of times in May. It is on the eastern side of campus, across from Tappan Square and next to Hall Auditorium. It is walkable to anywhere on campus. The New York Times had an article about it a few weeks ago. Book now.
We stayed at the Hotel at Oberlin when we brought our son to school this past August. The food is excellent and the mattresses are comfortable, but it is a bit noisy (thin doors and walls, I guess). We were unpleasantly surprised by this, since it’s not cheap. They also had only two rollaway cots for the entire hotel, so if you’re putting multiple family members in your room, you will need to reserve one of these ASAP. My son just used the mattress pad he’d brought for his dorm bed and slept on the floor.
However, it is by far the most convenient hotel to the college.
@Massmomm Glad to know that it’s a nice place, it looks pretty online! We booked a room with two queens since our Obie daughter will be staying there one night and her little sister might be along as well.
Hope your son is liking his first year!
@walkbanx Any news? I’ve been thinking about you all morning.
Yes, everyone is thinking of you @walkbanx and I hope you’re getting through the day!
sending good vibes @walkbanx!
i got denied. hurts a lot, thanks for thinking of me though guys
So sorry @walkbanx. A good option is to crush it at your 2nd choice school and transfer in the Spring or Fall of sophomore year. There is always movement from year 1 to year 2. Gives you a good chance to either (i) fall in love with your 2nd choice school, or (ii) show Oberlin you’re more than they saw on your ED1 app. Stay in touch with Oberlin and let them know why you’re special. Good luck to you.
welp, turning to other apps now i guess. anyone have any schools similar to oberlin they could suggest ?
I am so sorry you didn’t get the answer you were hoping for @walkbanx - the same thing happened to me my senior year. In the end, I wound up at a great school (Bates) and looking back I’m so happy for the path I ended up taking, even if it wasn’t what I envisioned at the outset. You have good news coming and will land somewhere great!
@walkbanx my daughter was looking at Knox in Illinois and really liked what they had to say. It seemed like a very creative place and I have also heard very good feedback from the CC community on it. You may want to check it out! She also loved Hamilton and Denison - I think Denison is a really special school and goes out of the way to build a great community.
@walkbanx I’m so sorry it didn’t work out. You mentioned Bard, Skidmore, and Hampshire in another thread. They might be worth another look.
@walkbanx, try Skidmore or Dickinson.
@LMC9902, he is actually a sophomore. We have driven him there and back at the beginning and end of each year from MA, and then flew him home for the breaks, but we just moved way up north to Maine, so he will now be flying home not only for the breaks, but for move in and move out as well. There’s a company called BinStored that stores your stuff over the summer, so if you’re coming from far away, you should look into this.
@walkbanx I’m so sorry. Other schools I might suggest are Grinnell, Lewis and Clark, and Hampshire
