OBERLIN ED RESULTS-CLASS OF 2021

Thanks @Massmomm - we are coming from Maryland/DC and she will bring her car so we will likely drive up with her and then fly back. I like the idea of leaving some things over the summer though - less clutter!

@walkbanx I visited Bard and it’s really cool. Lawrence University is another option with a similar vibe as Oberlin. Coop housing, local food from sustainable garden on campus, conservatory, etc.

walkbanx, I assume you will now go into the regular admissions pool. I would call the admissions office and tell them how much you love Oberlin and would like to go there, and to keep you in mind. My personal history is that I did not get into my top schools, and was waitlisted at Oberlin. Then, in May, they admitted me and I had to decide in a short period to go there or my other choice where I had already paid an admissions fee. I made the right decision.

The people are right. You should find a good backup. But last September, not all of the Oberlin admittees showed up, and they probably would have taken you then to fill a spot. So, it might be a last minute thing, although I would not bet on it. .

Been waiting with my ED girl since Wednesday when people started hearing…still no news…She called the admissions office and they said hopefully today, that 12/15 was a target and they are trying. And 5:00 pm on Friday came and went. Any thoughts out there on what this might mean? She will be needing financial aid, so I wonder if that adds time? She is excited about some other schools as back ups, but jeez.

Anyone else in the same boat - waiting to hear, and may not have posted?

And: what are the stats of people on this thread? I’m sure future applicants will appreciate reading…

Sorry to hear about the wait @DDey! It sounds like they got a larger ED pool than anticipated but I hope your daughter hears soon! I definitely feel for you as you wait.

For stats, my daughter had a 31 ACT (36 E, 35 R, 28 M, 26 S) and a 3.7 unweighted GPA from a competitive private school known for rigor. Her school doesn’t rank or weight their GPA but she has many APs and honors classes.

She spent a month last summer in China as a Global Scholar for her school and has plans to continue East Asian Studies (Likely Japanese).

She’s a writer who has won many scholastic awards and has been very involved in the writing community in DC and held internships since freshman year teaching writing to underprivileged children (800 or more hours donated). She has written three one acts that were performed at her school and she does a lot of theater (technical, acting and directing). She was also a photography major who won a scholastic art award for her work.

In terms of hooks, I’m not sure if this helps or hurts these days but she is bi-racial (Asian-Caucasian).

I will add that we didn’t apply for aid but did get merit money.

Congratulations LMC9902 for having such a talented daughter! With Oberlin’s emphasis on East Asian Studies, including the Shansi program, and writing, she should thrive there.

@LMC9902 thanks for your post. So many wonderful, interesting kids at Oberlin - your daughter included. Mine has very different interests and similar test/GPA numbers. Putting it aside for the weekend (or at least trying) and waiting until Monday.

Thanks @gratefulalum - I have been so impressed with the background of many students on CC and have had fun hearing what makes each student unique and passionate. I’m grateful that my daughter recognized how well she would fit at Oberlin and even happier that they felt the same way! She just got her Oberlin sweatshirt in the mail today (we ordered it on Wednesday night) and is unlikely to take it off any time soon!
