Obscure indie/alternative bands

Hey look, the world’s tritest music conveniently condensed into one thread! :D

Nah, a few of these artists are very good (Antlers, Bon Iver). But most of them are indeed very, very boring. How can one ever still enjoy listening to any artist that’s indie electronic/electropop after listening to, say, Boards of Canada’s Music Has a Right to Children a few times? I still theorize that this new wave of indie electropop or whatever you want to call it (MGMT, Passion Pit, etc.) is hipster-laced pop/dance music made by and for people who want to be “above” the mainstream but still retain very similar aesthetics.

I wouldn’t call MGMT indie anymore. They were indie in 2008 maybe.

I. Love. You.

Yeah, MGMT is huge. Sufjan Stevens is pretty famous. Are the Tings Tings obscure? They were in an Apple commercial. So was Yael Naim. The Killers are pretty famous. Iron and Wine, I don’t think they’ve been obscure since Garden State. I think the fact that the band Beirut comes up before the city in Lebanon on a google search means they’re not obscure. The Postal Service is not obscure. Phoenix’s albums have charted as high as the mid 30s in the US. Not that this list is supposed to mean my list was obscure. At all.

I love Matt & Kim! I remember some CC discussion about them right after that mojito or whatever commercial came out. I don’t think they’ll be obscure for long. If they even are as of now. I mean, they’ve been on like Jimmy Kimmel Live or something.

Gosh, I hate the word hipster.

I like MGMT fine–and recognize that they are book (hello Grammy nominees and millions of albums sold and radio airplay, etc…) but I’m not doing this because its “hipster-laced pop/dance music made by and for people who want to be “above” the mainstream but still retain very similar aesthetics.”

GOSH. Stop that disgusting line of reasoning.

I like the music because I like it and think it’s good music. It has nothing to do with the mainstream or being similar to music or being hipster-laced or any of that nonsensical crap.

I like the one Passion Pit song (remix of the reeling) I have–and from that song, they don’t really sound like MGMT to me.

Vampire Weekend is not obscure at all.

I like Bon Iver and The Antlers! Don’t think they are too obscure anymore either though.

Tings Tings are NOT obscure AT ALL (to me, they are also annoying)

LOL someone said the killers…wow. Love them though :)

And phoenix and the postal service aren’t obscure either. Like both of them.

Anyone here like Los Campesinos! ?

Beach House is good.

los campesinos? is that a mariachi band?
hahaha…jk.

Ivy League

I dunno if it’s obscure, but I like em

Yeasayer
Why?
Passion Pit

Passion Pit seems to be the most popular indie band amongst CC people.

Why? Anticon is mindblowing
http://www.myspace.com/whyanticon

Also, Cake

I like Los Campesinos. No, The Killers aren’t obscure but good music is good music. MSTRKRFT and Metric are obscure though. MGMT became popular. I hate it when that happens. Phoenix is not obscure but most people that I know haven’t heard of them so…
I think everyone loves Passion Pit.

I like this thread. It’s funny that much of what has been mentioned are pretty big names in “Indie”/Alternative (Indie is an odd blanket term, isn’t it?) Dig deeper!

Who here listens to Nine Inch Nails?

Well, since I love darkwave I can’t help but at least like a few of NIN’s stuff.

Brand New
Lydia
Paper Rival
Edison Glass
Dear and the Headlights
Copeland
Pompeii
Demi Lovato

I see what you did there.

Los Campesinos!! They came to Hong Kong and I didn’t go see them D:
