October 2009 SAT II - Literature

yeah i think the “expect” one was the last one

also, no i think that art does imitate life…after all, the player says that you should show audiences what they expect to see, as in, what is in life. Therefore, art does actually imitate life.

I put confusing values

ingette - i also did not include the paradox option. i think it was I and III.

bee123 - i wrote contradictory feelings. confusing values didn’t make sense because his values were established by the end of the passage.

@bee123: contradictory feelings.

on the livy one, the question about the speaker moving from ___ to ___. i was stuck but ended up putting from passivity to despair, i think. though maybe pretentiousness to self-knowledge.

oh! and the fortitude one killed me. what are your thoughts on that?

I put courage and rashness, or something along those lines

I put contradictory feelings
also i put courage and rashness
what did you guys put for the meaning of the word “mean” in line 2 of that poem?

the speaker moving from __ to __: i put self-congratulatory to dismayed. but now that i think about it, it could have been pretentiousness to self-knowledge (although he wasn’t really that certain of himself by the end of the passage, was he?)

fortitude: stoic restraint vs. manliness.

mean: i put average, but i think it was humble

No, I believe his values were conflicted because he was confused as to whether or not to act or not–he had an obligation to his daughter but also an obligation to God. His feelings were not in conflict, because he DID “hate” the man who stole his daughter away, but he knew he should not exhibit such emotions. There is, however, not a “counter” emotion of “loving” the man who stole his daughter away–rather, the competing values that he has. When he proclaims to God at the very end, he clearly has not sorted out his values.

Similarly, I put something about cheer to despair. It wasn’t passivity.

Fortitude I put constraint restraints to strength. It makes sense given fortitude’s definition.

For theatre, I put that the conventions of theatre were necessary because PLAYER proclaims many times that “real” things aren’t convincing, just like how the real death didn’t satisfy the audience. Thus, the dramatic conventions that Gunzen disapproves of are indeed necessary for theatre.

I think i totally screwed it up…i didnt have enough time to finish it, it was like,10 mins for the last play and the poem…argh… argh…argh…i wanna climb the empire state building right now…

i believe it was contradictory feelings because i remember the question specifically mentioning the end of the passage, during which the speaker was abruptly angry and sad about livy.

That was rough, especially the last poem. How many questions can you miss and still get 700+?

In the poem about humanity’s restlessness, I got B for the question that asked about what the phrase “watchful clocks” meant for the birds. Nothing else even remotely made sense, even though I don’t believe that the birds are “spying” on anything…that is what I put because of “watchful”.

That’s not really contradictory feelings…those are consistent. Contradictory feelings go along the lines of hating and loving Livy.

The father is not angry WITH Livy and sad WITH Livy, the speaker is never angry at his daughter, only at the people who stole her away.

For the birds, I put in ‘marked periods of time with their song’ coz it said time was noiseleess, and they marked it… so, I assumed they marked it with song.

i also put “marked periods of time” and “contradictory feelings”. i think it was dogma though; i remember that his exclamation put particular emphasis on how he is betraying the bible.

i’m contemplating canceling my score… i didn’t answer four questions, and i’m pretty sure i got 10+ wrong

i also thought it was dogmatic…

also, for the “man” poem, did you guys have an answer for something about how the bees “Sustained” on what god gave them? or something along those lines?

what was the meaning of the word ‘mean’ in the man poem?

Bee: no

ansley: i debated over “humble” and “average”. i put average because i interpreted the poet having a more critical than sympathetic opinion of mankind

“mean” was referring to nature, not mankind. i was also debating between average and humble. i put average, but i think it’s supposed to be humble, since the things from nature he discusses (the birds, for example) lead modest lives.
