OCU auditions

Do they only have auditions on campus? This was always one of my top choices for college, but my dad doesn’t want to fly all the way out to Oklahoma to audition.

Nate, I think you can send a video audition. You can call Mary Mowry and talk to her about it.

Nate,

If this is truly one of your top picks, you might want to talk to your parents about it being a double duty trip of checking out the campus and auditioning at the same time. We are from PA and our audition was the first time we went to campus due to the distance. We did not return again until we moved in so it can be done. Our decision early on was to visit local schools( only 3 of the 8) and then do the rest as audition/campus visits.

It is worth a trip!

Can anyone suggest a hotel to stay at for auditions? Mid price range. I stayed at the Biltmore last summer and I didn't care for it.

I can strongly recommend the Hampton Inn on the Northwest Expressway(<a href="http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=OKCNTHX%5B/url%5D">http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=OKCNTHX</a>)
405-947-0953- about 6 minutes to campus. I have stayed there several times so far and been very pleased. Nice clean rooms, great staff and breakfast too! AND......be sure to CALL for reservations and ask for the OCU rate- it is only $75 per night!

PM me for any questions....and good luck! Look for my D - she plans to be helping if she can during auditions!

I agree--I also recommend the Hampton Inn on the Northwest Expressway. We've stayed there a couple of times. As Mikksmom said, it's clean, just a few minutes from campus, and provides a warm breakfast too.

I don't remember a Hampton Inn. I stay at Hawthorn Suites. It is on Northwest Expressway near Classen. It also has breakfast. Could this be the one you are talking about? I've always enjoyed my stay there and the room has been fine, except the last time there was a leak in the closet (they were aware because there were buckets!) Their local phone is 405-840-1440. They have a toll-free phone for reservations, but I tried it once and they booked me in the wrong location. Then charged my credit card for a no-show at the wrong place. Long story, but they were nice and fixed everything.

After looking at the link you provided, I see it is not the same place, but I don't remember seeing it. I will look for it next time I'm there.

I also agree with Hampton Inn. We've tried a couple of other places, but like the Hampton the best

I finally got my map thing to work to find Hampton Inn. I have probably passed it a dozen times, but never really noticed! Hawthorn Suites is on NW Expressway and Blackwelder, but Blackwelder doesn't go all the way through to the school from there.

musicmom, does Hawthorn Suites offer a discount to the families of OCU students?

We also stayed at the Hampton Inn and they were very accomodating. It was very clean as well, and a convenient location.

We stayed a couple of times at Hawthorne. Not really my preference. There is a comfort Inn at Founders Plaza and another one off I-44 both nice. Almost all the hotels have an OCU rate and they range from upper $60s-upper $70s for double or even a suite sometimes/ Most all include breakfast. And despite the apperance on the map, almost none of them are more than 5-7 minutes from campus. Traffic is really not a major issue when we've been there

They aren't on the OCU web site as doing so, but they do, just call and ask.

My wife stayed there picking up my D from the summer program and we both stayed at the Biltmore when we brought her. Both were okay, but nothing great.

I wish I could stay at a hotel at those rates when visiting or dropping my college kid off at college in Manhattan! :D

I bet you "could" stay at one with those rates...you just probably wouldn't want to :)

Yes, Hawthorn Suites does offer an OCU discount. I think I have paid around $65. The first several times I stayed there, it was great, but the last time I was not impressed with the condition of the room (leak), but it was late at night when I went to the room, so I just went to sleep. I have been thinking about staying somewhere else so I'm very interested in hearing of other places nearby. I have seen the Courtyard or Marriott across the street, but I think it is much more expensive. I'm usually there only one night and not in the room except to sleep and shower, so I'm not THAT picky, but I'm open for suggestions. I have stayed in my D's room but that is when moving in and the roommates are not there yet. I would not want to intrude otherwise.

By the way, WMonMTDad, my D knows your son, said she met him at auditions when she was helping out, and has apparently met up with him again because she is threatening to trade her brother for your S!

MM1215...I think we had been assigned to that same leaky room on the last time we stayed at Hawthorne. Then they moved us and we had to put up with a late night party they wouldn't quiet down for us. That was it for us, especially given that we had begun to find our way around enough to realize there were comparably priced alternatives not as far away as we thought. We really like the Comfort Inn at Founders Place. It's quiet and not nearly as congested as some of the others. It also seems to have been refurbed recently.

So funny re your D!!! We're missing him a bit although we have managed to stay busy enough that it hasn't quite sunk in yet. D gets frustrated when he won't return her calls and texts as quickly. As nearly as we can tell he is absolutely loving it there although I think he wishes the pace would pick up a bit in the acting classes. Seems to have made lots of friends. We've been laughing at some of his adventures...he CLEPed his math requirement but decided he still wanted math so he's taking a calculus class and apparently settng the curve for now. I'm sure the math majors appreciate an MT doing that to them.

In reading some of your old posts, I think my D and your S have a lot in common, more than she and her 17-year-old brother who are pretty much opposites. She was also in band (oboe & color guard) and in top <4% of her class. She got all of her math, history and foreign language out of the way with dual-credit classes offered in high school, and she recently tested out of the computer requirement at OCU. I don't, however, think she will take calculus for the fun of it!

She has been cast in the chorus of the spotlight opera, so I will be coming up there at the end of October, and then again sometime in November for her junior recital. I think I'll check out other places to stay.

Back to hotels near OCU. We stayed at the Embassy Suites when dropping our daughter off at OCU this summer and at the Hampton Inn on the return. The rooms at the Embassy Suites were definitely better but breakfast wasn't included. Distance from campus is about the same.
