I'm in a different situation than most of the kids on here and didn't know if anyone might have any answers for me.
I went to Tech back in 93, right out of high school and really didn't want to be there, it was more my parents idea than mine and I lasted a year, then was academically dismissed.
I recently returned to school at a CC thinking to do something easy like teaching, but over the past year have completely fallen in love with mathematics again. I want to try to return to Tech to finish there (in math) and have gotten all the info needed to be readmitted, but am worried 1)I won't fit in with all young kids there 2)I might not be able to hang acedemically since I have a 4yr.old and will soon be a single mom.
So - has anyone been through the readmission process? Are there many older students there (that aren't gradaute students?)

Tech does have older students, frequently ex-military, but it’s not that popular of a school for the 30+ undergrads. You would see more students your age at place like Georgia State.

But does it matter? Students at Tech seem generally respectful of others. Unless you show up at a fraternity party on Saturday night, I doubt you will hear any negative comments. If you show your intelligence in class discussions / asking questions, you’ll find several students that will want to work with you on projects and assignments.

Sorry to hear about that.

Whether or not you will have the time to handle an academic program is something only you can determine. I generally tell people to budget 3 hr/week per class hour. So if you take 15 hours, that’s a 45 hr / week commitment. Part-time is 6 hr / week, or an 18 hour/week commitment. Can you handle that? That’s for you to determine.

Thanks for responding! I don’t see myself as hanging at frat parties, been there done that so to speak…I guess no matter where I go now, I’ll be around a bunch of younger kids…I just wasn’t sure if it was a “normal” thing at Tech. I have no desire to go to GSU at all.

Don’t worry- Its the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time…which is what is kicking me back to school. So long as I can get $$ for school, family will help with living expenses so I have the time to study…Spongebob will come in very handy over the next few years
Can you attend Ga Tech as an undergraduate pt? I can’t find any info on that anywhere…it looks like it needs to be ft?

I actually had a nice, long email that didn’t post :(

The short version of it is that Tech does allow part-time students, but I believe the policy is that you must graduate withing 7 years.

Good luck :)

Wanted to update
I had to go through the readmission process and no problems, I will be heading back in the fall!! Yay! It was alot of paperwork and meeting my advisor, but easy enough. I will be going pt in the fall and then ft next spring.
I’ll have to take a few of the freshman courses again, though I’ve taken them elsewhere, they don’t count since I had failed them at Tech to begin with, but third times the charm…or so I hear! ;)

Thats Great! Good Luck!! :)

Can’t wait to see you there :]

Well if you are looking to remarry there will be lost of Grad student your age to choose from, which is good, as a former Tech student and mom of an infant… It will be tough but 4 year old are different from 4 month olds. I think you going back to tech to follow your first love will set a great example for your child. I had a fellow student that used to bring his infant daughter to class with him, the professor never said anything to him, but he did have to leave when she would get fussy. I also had a TA that brought his daughter to class with him and she would color while he taught, not sure about his personal situation though. Does Tech offer child care facilities?

Lol…definately NOT looking to get married again anytime soon! I’m all open for friends with benefits though…haha
Congrats on the munchkin…goes by super quick so enjoy it
Don’t know about childcare…I don’t think so, but it is one of my biggest fears right now that she’ll have some sort of vomiting bug the day of an exam. Interesting that people took kids to class, I guess you do what you have to do…though my daughter would be driving me nuts asking questions about everything.

They must not because a few grad students I work with take turns babysitting during the day in the building.

There is also another daycare facility in the works, from what I hear.

Do you know anything about the Savannah campus and any daycare plans?
