Odum Village Info

Anyone know anything about Odum Village? I'm a transfer student and somehow got assigned there. It's really far away from alot of things so I'm not really happy about it. How far of a walk is it from there to north campus? I appreciate any info. Thanks

well first off, i'm sorry to hear you got stuck in Odum Village.

Odum village was the old student-family housing apartments, but they built new ones and instead of tearing down Odum they decided to open it for undergrades and graduate students. For some reason Carolina thought people were gonna be rushing to get spots before they "run out." Needless to say the university was shocked when on the first days of registration for odum began only like 3 or so apartments were requested by students. So because Morrison is closed for renovations (a dorm that holds like 1000 students) and Cobb is reopening (a dorm that holds about 300 students) and because they increased the incoming freshmen class by about 80 the university has no choice but to force incoming students to live in the many open spots available. I feel bad for the RAs who got stuck there. I have friends who are going to go to Granville towers this fall because all that was left for rising sophmores was Odum Village.

Now when it comes to walking, I recommend you bring a bike. Because its going to be a long walk. Odum is really far down in south campus. But if i were to guess I would say it might be a 20 minute walk from Odum to North Campus.

sorry I couldn't say anything positive about this, but maybe it won't be so bad

so, ummm welcome to carolina, and if you're still going to choose to live in Odum (which probably won't be so bad) then your anger against the housing office is something you have in common with most of the rising sophmores (well except me, i got lucky and I live in north campus, which i know doesn't really help you any)

I am a transfer student who got an Odum assignment... I am living in Granville for sure.

Current students: Do you have to do anything specifically to decline housing at Odum? Do you just not return the housing contract or what?

Yeah, I'm not really happy about the situation or anything.. Are there still spots available in Granville? Is there a big cost difference? Ahh! I don't know what to do.

from what i've seen on the internet granville looks pretty good. no, I do not think the price difference is very big at all, plus the food options look great. when I talked to the granville staff it sounded like there are plenty of spaces left (sounds like they fill a lot during CTOPS/TSOPS - so I would decide now if I were you).

does anyone know the answer to my question above? do I just not sign the housing contract when they send it to me?

i'm not really sure about that, you should probably just call the housing office and tell them that you've decided to live in granville instead of on campus and see what to do next about cancelling your contract.

granville is probably a better choice, its right on franklin street and its right by north campus and its a pretty nice building. Also from wut I've heard the price is pretty similiar to on campus housing

If you want to cancel your housing app. you can read about it here: http://housing.unc.edu/get_room/cancellation.html

I am still deciding what I want to do because I was assigned a roommate that I had planned to live with so I still have to talk to her, plus im not sure how hard it would be to get a room at Granville for both of us so we could still live together. I might just call there and find out what is still available.

Hey, just wanted to say that, unless the slight increase in the freshman class has changed things, you and your intended roommate should have absolutely no problem securing a room together at Granville Towers. In spite of what they might lead you to believe, I've never known them to be at full capacity while I've been at Carolina.
