Well, my son got his call from our congressman's office today saying that he was receiving an appointment! I guess THE envelope will arrive in a few days. I read that they give the congressman 3 days lead time to call to inform the candidate.
So all of that agonizing waiting is over! It was starting to get really bad. I hope you all who are still waiting get yours soon!

I come to everyone on a rather somber note today to remind all of you future naval and marine corps officers to always look after your men/women. Last night 19 Feb 2006, while standing watch on my boat. One of my best friends from the boat shot himself on the head. There were no signs to be seen but there was obvious trouble in his division. With the lack of strong leadership and caring about the personnel things like this come to pass. I am extremely distraught over the loss of my friend as I am an EMAT (emergency medical assistance team) responder and was the only medical personnel on board at the time. It is on thing to lose a friend. It is another to have to give him medical care and know that no matter how hard you try he is not going to come back. Please don't let this happen again.

Sorry to hear that Fergs. Hang in there.

Wow Fergs, I'm so sorry. I hope you're doing all right.

I'm hanging in there. It is not easy to see that sort of thing. I am currently just trying to sort things out in my head to understand what I am actually feeling because I am still very numb and am wondering when I am going to wake up from this dream.

Dear dear Kyle... I am so so sorry for you to have had to go through something this awful. This has to be the most disturbing post I've ever read on these boards. Be easy with yourself. And above all, take care of yourself. Please. Do everything you know to find some comfort. Are you still at sea? Is there some one you can talk too? Will put you above all else in thoughts tonight.

Fair winds & following seas darlin'....Hang tough.

Kyle,
I'm so sorry to hear about the tragic loss of your friend. I hope you can talk with a chaplain if you're comfortable doing that. You are in our prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I know that same feeling, I had my best friend pass away, but with time and a lot of talking to trusted people it will get better. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am sorry again for your loss.

I received word from my Congressman Pat Tiberi last Thursday, I'll be heading to Annapolis as a member of the class of 2010! Lifelong dream come true!

congratulations navylax2010!!!!! you must be ecstatic.

We got notifications from our congressman AND one of our senators that my son is getting an appointment. It seems like I read about this happening to someone else, or was it for nominations? Anyway, I think we will wait until we get the actual appointment in hand and then call one of the offices and tell them we don't need their slot. What would you think we should do? Anyone have a good answer?

A nomination is not an appointment. Let the Academy and Congressional/Senatorial offices sort things out. Son received our Congressman's and Senator's nomination and we did not do a thing to "correct" them.

Of course I KNOW the difference between a nomination and an appointment! He got nominations from 3 sources previously. This was a letter from the senator, and a phone call from our congressional office notifying him of the appointment for each of those MOC slots that would arrive in the mail this week. I think we should call and decline one of them, so they can give that appointment slot to someone else. I think they just didn't communicate. It would be a shame for someone else not to get that slot. They could give it to the "at large" pool.

fergsonfire -- our prayers are with you and his family.

Just to clarify: While it might be useful to decline a nomination with the intent of allowing another candidate in the MOC's "pool" to receive a required nomination, it does not mean that action will equate or result in another "appointment" slot to some one else, keeping in mind that not all nominees get appointments.

An appointment is an appointment! That simple (yet complex to actually attain)! Don't call anyone...just send the card back either accepting or declining the appointment. USNA will figure out the extra Noms...you can count on that!

Congratulations!
